Not ambition for honors, he wrote to Muir, but the com pulsion of broken health made me risk a foreign appointment, and I especially regret that the opportunity to share in the publication of your valuable papers, and to know you most inti mately, is to be lost to me. To the deep regret of his friends, Avery died in China the follow ing year. Mr. Carmany, despairing of the Overland as a financial venture, let it come to an end in 1875, and Muir, when his current engagements were discharged, formed new literary connections. “John Muir was a prolific letter-writer. According to his daughter Helen, his first order of the day was to answer letters he had received and to initiate new correspondence when the need arose. In 1915, when Dr. Bade was commissioned by Muir’s daughters to be literary executor, he immediately began to collect letters of copies of letters. He says that where he had hoped to locate a thousand letters, he finally accumulated nearly double that number. Compiling The Life and Letters of John Muir so soon after Muir’s death gave him the additional opportunity to collect reminiscences from many people who had known Muir. Since first-hand reminiscences and particularly letters, gave an insight and understanding of a person that can be gained in no other way. Dr. Bade has indeed made an invaluable contribution to the study of John Muir”
“The two volumes of The Life and Letters of John Muir were to be volumes nine and ten of “The Writings…”, the ten volume set sold by subscription only; therefore, Houghton Mifflin Company held up this separate publication of The Life and Letters until all subscribers had received volumes nine and ten.” Kimes #366.
Volume nine was released in 1923, and volume ten in 1924. Given the noted delay, the copy right on the separate editions match these dates, however both title pages show 1924.
