This biography tells the true story of an inventor who loved different colors found in nature so much that he worked hard to invent something that would bring the outside world to children - a crayon! Although it is a biography, it follows the story of the crayons more than the story of the inventor. Regardless, this story uses bright illustrations to highlight the informative text and tell the story of the crayon. In the classroom I would use this to help students brainstorm ways that they solved everyday problems to make things better. This would encourage to think about inventions and how they themselves can be inventors. ( )

Although the book is very long for a picture and uses some terms that might be for more advanced children, I think this is a good read because not only does it tell of a true story of the invention of crayola crayons, but it is also interesting and captivating for children. The colors in the illustrations themselves are enough to catch the children's attention, and they also learn a neat story. ( )

Nonfiction - Biography

"The Crayon Man" is about Edwin Binney and his invention: the crayon. It is an interactive book that tells the inspiring story of Binny and how he came to invent this worldwide loved toy. He loved nature's vibrant colors so much that he created a way to bring the outside world to children.

I thought that this book was incredibly written and beautifully illustrated. This would be a fantastic book to have in a middle elementary classroom for children to read and discover about this invention of Crayons.

The story of "The Crayon Man" is a wonderful story that explains how the crayons we use in our classrooms today came to be. It talks about a man who had a need brought to his attention and how he then proceeded to creatively solve the problem. This book is a great opportunity to teach children about perseverance, and it is also a lovely book that focuses on enjoying the things you love, like color. ( )

Edwin Binney, an inventor, sets out to create a colorful writing instrument. Through trial and error, he creates what we now know as Crayola Crayons. The book is filled with beautiful, colorful illustrations to help tell the story of Edwin Binney and his invention of Crayola Crayons. This would be an excellent book for children to learn about the inventor and history behind the crayon. ( )
