Det finns inga diskussioner på LibraryThing om den här boken. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!!!! What else can I say? Her books never fail to please---just keep writing, JoJo!!! Easily the best book I’ve read in the past year. I loved the characters, the plot, the writing style. I got completely sucked in. Loved. It! Well-researched book about the women packhorse librarians of Kentucky in the 1930's, part of Eleanor Roosevelt's new traveling library. The novel focuses on the relationships of these women librarians in the small town of Baileyville, and that's really what makes this story so readable - each woman has her own personality and capabilities, and there is a strong sense of loyalty among them. I easily became involved in each woman's personal story, especially the two main characters Alice and Margery. The novel presents the limitations of women's roles during this time, especially in a small southern mining town, and then the plot develops to show how the women overcome many of these limitations. Themes of power, trust, growth, friendship, and standing up for what is right are woven into the compelling plot, and the reader will be rewarded with a satisfying story as love and justice prevails. A story set in the depression era past in the rural mountain area of Kentucky in which a small group of women determined to bring literacy and education to their community against the odds of nature and of men who strive to discourage this project. It is an entertaining read, based on a true story, touches on all aspects of man's prejudices that unfortunately, still exist today. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
"Set in Depression-era America, a breathtaking story of five extraordinary women and their remarkable journey through the mountains of Kentucky and beyond, from the author of Me Before You and The Peacock Emporium Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England. But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt's new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically. The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything. They will be joined by three other singular women who become known as the Horseback Librarians of Kentucky. What happens to them--and to the men they love--becomes a classic drama of loyalty, justice, humanity and passion. Though they face all kinds of dangers, they're committed to their job--bringing books to people who have never had any, sharing the gift of learning that will change their lives. Based on a true story rooted in America's past, The Giver of Stars is unparalleled in its scope. At times funny, at others heartbreaking, this is a richly rewarding novel of women's friendship, of true love, and of what happens when we reach beyond our grasp for the great beyond"-- Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
