The Bible is full of adventurous and exciting stories for boys, but what about girls? Author Caryn Rivadeneira picks out fifteen women from the Bible, each with an exciting tale of her own to tell, and illustrator Sonya Abby Soekarno pictures one event from each story with pleasingly bright simplicity, and nicely non-white heroines. I love the faces, the clothes, the expressions… and I love the simply told stories, each offered in a pleasing first-person voice, making this a delightful book to share with young children.

The writing is as simple and graceful as the images. Bible verses, offered in clear readable print, tie each story to scripture, and each tale ends with a simple reminder that God does great things for and through his women. Prophet, queen, widow or frightened teenager, each of these fifteen women experiences God’s guidance and strength. The fruit is eaten, the Savior is born, and the gardener proves to be much more.

Gritty and Graceful is a beautiful collection of tales that provide an overview of the whole of Scripture, all from the points of view of women. It’s a beautiful book for girls… but really for anyone—non-reader, early reader, elder sibling or adult teacher—who wants to see the truth through different eyes.
