Found this book because of the movie "A Door in the Floor". The movie follows part 1 of this book very well. I love the stories inside the story.

Originally listened to the audiobook narrated by the GREAT George Guidall but now I own the physical and look forward to re-reading some day. ( )

A Widow for One Year by John Irving (1999)
  arosoff | Jul 10, 2021 |
Poor John Irving. I wonder how long it took for him to get tired of everyone pointing out that he keeps writing about the same things over and over. I, for one, had to stop reading him after The Cider House Rules, because I just couldn’t take BEING SHOUTED AT IN ALL CAPS in Owen Meany. But I’m glad I picked up A Widow for One Year: Irving appears to have written this as one big “F___ you” to the critics. In it, he has not one but FOUR characters who are writers, and all of them, to one degree or another, write about the same things over and over. Just like John Irving! It’s very meta.

In case you’re not familiar with Irving’s fetish topics, they are:
-younger men obsessed with older women
-sex crimes
-prostitution
-abortion
-individuals obsessed with fitness
-really horrible car accidents
-characters who are writers
-New England private schools
-bears

Every single one of these -- except bears -- makes an appearance in A Widow for One Year. Very impressive. But this time, one of the main characters, Ruth, is a writer who makes the case that writing should be more invented than real. She is the most successful of the four – but her writing becomes more real as the novel progresses. Two other characters, Eddie and Marion, are also writers, but their writing is inferior to Ruth’s. Eddie keeps writing about one formative relationship (with Marion, as it happens), while Marion is a bit more imaginative in weaving her obsessions into her work, but no more successful. Yet Ruth’s best book is her most real, and least inventive. (The fourth writer’s work is primarily for children and doesn’t seem to fit on this spectrum.) So what is Irving saying? Good writers are inventors, but the best are both inventors and recyclers? Whatever the lesson, as a would-be writer myself, I wish I’d been born in an Irving novel, where I’d have an above-average chance of being published.

If you’re not too tired of Irving’s repetition, have a go at his latest remix. It’s thoughtful and self-aware, perhaps painfully at times. But as usual, his characters and their drama are interesting, often comical, and always touching. ( )

A Widow for One Year: A Novel by John Irving I've given this extraordinary book 5 Stars because it is really 3 (or more) books in one and it held my interest through all of its 24 odd hours of listening. As usual I won't summarise it, you can read that stuff anywhere. What I will tell you is about the characters, they were so real that the guy reading it reminded me of the father, who was pretty obnoxious, and I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't the father who was reading the book even though I knew this was exactly how the father would sound. This is a long story (the book is 576 pages) but it weaves and wobbles its way through several lives and characters from the books within this book occasionally appear too.I learned something about driving so fundamental that I had never heard nor been taught it until I came across it here. This is also the guy that wrote The World According to Garp and Ciderhouse Rules and A Prayer For Owen Meany.I also came across him saying that he always wrote the last sentence first then worked his way back to the beginning and by the time he got to the front it was like remembering something that had already happened.Great book. There's a lot to love about this novel, but there's too much other stuff as well... It feels repetitive and over-structured. I think he needed a better editor for this one. As usual, Irving is funny, outrageous, sad, etc. ( )
