King of the Playground is about a young boy, Sammy, who bullies other children when they come to play. Kevin goes to the playground each day and comes right back home because Sammy is there. Kevin finally got the courage to stand up for himself and play on the playground with Sammy. Throughout this story, children learn the importance of treating each other kindly. They learn the meaning of courage and how to stand up for themselves when someone is treating them unfairly. This picture book is about a young boy, named Kevin, who is scared to go to the playground after encountering a bully. Sammy, the bully, calls himself the 'king of the playground' and threatens Kevin. With the help of his father, Kevin finally sees through the empty threats of his bully. I loved the role Kevin's father played in the book. He shows his son that he could get around every one of Sammy's threats and stand up for himself. In the end, the author shows readers that the bullying has stopped and Kevin and Sammy have become friends. I think this book would be great to use in an elementary classroom because it's relatable and teaches kids to stand up for themselves no matter how harmful words may be. Kevin is a young boy who gets picked on at the playground by a boy named Sammy. Kevin tells his dad that Sammy won't let him on the playground and that he will tie him, burry him, or lock him in a cage with bears if he comes on the playground. Kevin's dad explains to him that the amount of time that it would take Sammy to do all of these things, that Kevin could kick his feet, push the dirt back in, and climb out before Sammy could be successful. I think this could be a good book to read to my students if we are having bullying issues or some students who aren't getting along. I can also use this to show students even though you may not get along with someone at first, that you can put your differences aside and become friends. Media: color pencil This story is about a young boy who finds his voice against the playground bully through his dad, who teaches him to overturn scary situations into humorous ones. By doing so, the young boy gets more brave as the days go on, and eventually finds his voice to stand up against the bully. This is a colorful picture book that shows children how to overcome scary situations by using their creative and humorous side. This is another great book to expose students to many different ways of how to handle bullying situations. Society tells us that we need to physically fight back, but that is not always the case. It is much more rewarding to overcome bullies by standing up to them, and using creativity and humor to make the situation a positive one.
