McGraw is at his best when unraveling the technical aspects of a song—how difficult it is to sing, how its arrangement contributes to its emotional force.... eacham is an unshowy and empathetic writer who hails from the Doris Kearns Goodwin school of vaguely comforting, it’ll-be-okay-we’ve-been-here-before historical scholarship. To him, our American songbook, in all its sprawling messiness, unites more than it divides. Neither the main text nor McGraw’s commentary goes particularly deep ... The authors are agreeably inclusive in their repertoire ... Not in the musicological class of Alan Lomax or at the historical heights of David Hackett Fischer’s Liberty and Freedom, but worthy reading for the anthemically minded. Music expresses the soul of a nation and illustrates its moods and contradictions from one era to another across time. This book conveys this history from the years before the war for independence to the election of Barack Obama. It jibes with the view of Henry David Thoreau: “When I hear music, I fear no danger.
