This graphic novel is a letter from mother to oldest child about the postpartum depression she suffered after Scarlet's birth. It's intensely sad and honest, and I imagine it will touch many women in the same situation. The black-line sketches are simple, almost as spare as stick figures, which effectively imparts the loneliness of Wong's journey. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
"In this intimate and moving graphic memoir, Teresa Wong writes and illustrates the story of her struggle with postpartum depression in the form of a letter to her daughter Scarlet. Equal parts heartbreaking and funny, Dear Scarlet perfectly captures the quiet desperation of those suffering from PPD and the profound feelings of inadequacy and loss. As Teresa grapples with her fears and anxieties and grasps at potential remedies, coping mechanisms, and her mother's Chinese elixirs, we come to understand one woman's battle against the cruel dynamics of postpartum depression. Dear Scarlet is a poignant and deeply personal journey through the complexities of new motherhood, offering hope to those affected by PPD, as well as reassurance that they are not alone"--Provided by publisher. Teresa Wong shares her honest and tender story of a Asian mom suffering through postpartum depression. It's told in black & white graphic novel format. Nothing fancy. Reading the book, I felt like someone listening to a close friend on the edge of a breakdown.
She has a quiet voice. In a world where I feel everyone is just trying to talk over each other.... It was comforting. ( )
