Seductive, unsettling, and beautifully written, The Truants is a debut novel of literary suspense perfect for lovers of Agatha Christie and The Secret History--a thrilling exploration of deceit, first love, and the depths to which obsession can drive us. "This is a remarkably assured debut, deftly plotted and with vivid, compelling characters that leap off the page." --Jojo Moyes, author of Me Before You People disappear when they most want to be seen. Jess Walker has come to a concrete campus under the flat grey skies of East Anglia for one reason: To be taught by the mesmerizing and rebellious Dr Lorna Clay, whose seminars soon transform Jess's thinking on life, love, and Agatha Christie. Swept up in Lorna's thrall, Jess falls in with a tightly-knit group of rule-breakers--Alec, a courageous South African journalist with a nihilistic streak; Georgie, a seductive, pill-popping aristocrat; and Nick, a handsome geologist with layers of his own. But when tragedy strikes the group, Jess turns to Lorna. Together, the two seek refuge on a remote Italian island, where Jess tastes the life she's long dreamed of--and uncovers a shocking secret that will challenge everything she's learned.… (mer)

This is one of my best books of the year to date. There is so much here and Weinberg's mastery of her story is impressive. Jess Walker is a freshman at East Anglia University because she read a book she loved and learned that its author, Dr. Lorna Clay is a professor there. She is also trying to get away from her suburban family and its secrets and her role in the middle of 4 siblings. In her pursuit of this brilliant woman, Jess goes through typical freshie fare: illness away from home, stress over course work, a new best friend and dormmate, Georgie Duncan, and a new boyfriend, Nick. Add in Georgie's new roguish boyfriend, Alec, a journalist from South Africa and Jess has her new posse and a fulfilling semester of fun, freedom, and intellectual growth. At her first big campus party, all the players are present and she reflects: "You spend years trying to climb out of the role your family has you in only to be confused with someone else entirely." Dr. Lorna Clay is a campus favorite, mingling with her students and choosing favorites. Her specialty is Agatha Christie and this novel soon begins to resemble one, because there is an ominous layer of entanglement and triangular relationships. Jess begins to have feelings for Alec, which he encourages. Lorna is somehow embroiled in this and Jess is warned not to trust her. As bright as Jess is, she falls for some stupid stuff. But the author is always one step ahead with another revelation that wows the characters and the reader. The book could lean toward psychological thriller, but in a Henry James, understated way. It never felt manic, and there is not a mystery to solve per se, but there are some pieces to put together and their outcome was beyond my meager guesses. Satisfying and gratifying both. ( )

It was an interesting story but I feel like it has been done before and that there was nothing different about this one.

Several love triangles, college students and their professors, questionable morals, etc. A lot like The Secret History but it layered in Agatha Christie books as a subplot. ( )

Truants is definitely a low key Donna Tartt. It has all the elements and the story line is very similar, but lacks the depth of prose and language.
That does not mean it’s not a good book at all. I found it quite intriguing and the story plot completely caught my attention.
Jess is a 19 year old girl and she is as normal as normal comes. Quite ordinary too. That is, until she joins a cosy little clique made up of her, Georgie, Nick and Alec. All of them are inspired -and connected in some way- to Professor Lorna, who teaches English at the University they all attend.
Under Lorna’s magnetic personality, they all come alive. Their lives become intertwined and there is always this looming sense of dread just round the corner that keeps the reader turning the pages.
Inevitably, their lives become disrupted by the intensity of their relationships and their connection is lost by a tragedy.
Denouement comes swiftly and quite unexpected. I thoroughly enjoyed how it all came to be, but found the ending a bit stretched for pages. I think we could have done with less psychological rambling about. That would have created more impact, in my humble opinion.
All in all, a good read. Will be keeping an eye out for more from Kate. ( )

'Lorna had been a doorway into another world. Alec had, as well. I had followed them, crossing lines, and the world had flared with colour.'

A tale of a young university student being seduced into a world so very different from her own, where among the drab concrete buildings of an East Anglian university she finds an enigmatic lecturer and a group of friends who are so fabulously exotic and exciting. Then events take a darker turn and our main character finds herself in deep waters. Sounds familiar....?

I really wanted to like this more, but it all seemed too derivative, and utterly unbelievable. No university lecturer would even be remotely allowed to behave like that. And some of the plot details are just impossible to believe. And Jess speaks like no 18-year old I met when I was that age.

I admit to resorting to skimming through this. Others, I hope will enjoy this. But not for me, I'm afraid. Generously rounding up from 2.5 to 3 stars, because every book is the product of a singular passion and commitment by an author and it's more than I've ever managed! ( )

Wow! What a book!

Having been caught up in COVID lockdown for what is starting to feel like years, I have been missing my treasured outings to Daunt Books (every post-payday Sunday afternoon, with occasional top-ups in between), so have been more than usually susceptible to those enticing recommendation emails from Amazon. One such promoted this book, and in a moment of weakness (I generally just delete those emails without opening them) I succumbed to temptation. It turned out, however, to be a moment of serendipity rather than weakness.

The synopsis on the cover seemed promising, with a lot of ingredients that I usually enjoy – a story set in a university or school, a hint of mystery, a charismatic tutor – and a promising comparison to The Secret History. I have, however, all too often been sold the dummy with such promotions, and the Donna Tartt allusions have definitely been overdone by reviewers.

My trepidations were entirely misplaced, although I do question the comparison to The Secret History. This is a great end engrossing story entirely in its own right. One thing they do have in common is an extraordinary feeling of assuredness. It is difficult to believe that this is Kate Weinberg’s first novel.

Jess Walker turns up at university in East Anglia, eager to begin her course in English, and is particularly looking forward to attending a course to be delivered by Lorna Clay on the works of Agatha Christie. Dr Clay is a celebrity academic, having previously taught at Cambridge and established a following beyond the ivory towers of academia through her popular study, The Truants, and several television appearances. Indeed, it was the lure of Dr Clay that led Jess to apply to that university.

A shy, retiring girl, Jess soon becomes very friendly with Georgie, a young woman of completely different personality: beautiful, effervescent and relentlessly hedonistic. Right from the start, Georgie and Jess are swept up in adoration for Lorna Clay, and, like all her other students, find themselves working hard, desperate to win her approbation.

During their first term, Georgie falls in love with Alec, a slightly older student who had already worked for some years as a journalist in his native South Africa. Alec is devastatingly attractive, and he and Georgie soon become the golden couple of the campus. Jess, meanwhile, has established a relationship with Nick, a second-year medical student, and the four of them become a firm group, spending all their free time together.

Of course, such an idyllic opening can only herald darker experiences to come, and they certainly do. Drink, drugs and infidelity all rear their heads, with devastating effect. Meanwhile, Jess continues to be dedicated to her studies, and immerses herself in Agatha Christie’s works at the behest of the enigmatic Lorna.

Kate Weinberg writes with great clarity, and I found myself hooked almost immediately, with my empathy moving between the different characters. All of the characters are wonderfully drawn, and the dynamics of the relationships between them are utterly engulfing and believable.

This is a great success, and a powerful debut novel. ( )
