This book was about the women of the family who live in a cabin in the woods. A beloved member of their family is in the military, and they constantly worry about her while admiring her bravery. This book features beautiful illustrations that really mingle with Native culture within the story. The author's note was incredibly insightful. This book would work for 1st or 2nd graders. It would be good if we were entering into discussions about Native history, war, or similar topics to get a conversation started. Here is my issue with this book and the way it is tagged (and how other sites are also tagging it) It is not until the END of the story where we truly see the homage to Cherokee culture. It is in the Author's Note and yes, we CAN imply it from the illustrations. But I think this book can pertain to any group of strong women with a family member who is serving in a war. This would be best for primary grades. This story is a poem about a fictional Cherokee family who is praying for one of their female family members to return from serving in a war. This book is very simple and easy to understand, but it also would be another good introductory book for young children when starting to teach about Native American nations and cultures. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

"At the mountain's base sits a cabin under an old hickory tree. And in that cabin lives a family -- loving, weaving, cooking, and singing. The strength in their song sustains them through trials on the ground and in the sky, as they wait for their loved one, a pilot, to return from war."--Amazon.
