Who are the caregivers? We all are, for at the heart of being human is the capacity to care, to reach out to others and explore the relationships we build. The Soul of Caregiving is about us and how we, as caregivers, serve, even sacrifice, for those in need. Professionally skilled as we may be to meet the needs of others, a fundamental core component of our busy lives as caregivers, is the necessity to stop and rest. It is not a waste of time, but rather a luxury of time, to ponder, reflect, and grow from our experiences. We, as caregivers, experience vulnerability, helplessness, fears, and pain over the traumatic events we experience because we care. We care about those whom we are called to serve. Compassion fatigue comes about because we care. We look at how to recognize the warning signs, take action to avoid them, and learn how to recover from them in building compassion resilience.… (mer)

I really enjoyed reading this book. Every caregiver, rather in a professional environment, or someone simply caring for another, should have a resource like this in their pocket. It touches on the most important aspects of caregiving, beginning with your own. Caregivers tend to think of others first and neglect their own emotional and physical self. “You can’t take care of someone unless you take care of yourself first.” This books gives a solid perspective of how caregivers, although in the shadows, should be pillars of emotional strength inside and out.

I won this book as part of a Library Thing giveaway.

My husband was diagnosed with SPS the month before this giveaway. I have been through it a few times but I feel like it is more for people who are actually in the field of caregiving. I am not a professional caregiver yet I feel that there are still plenty of things to learn or relate to in the book and I feel like I find another each time I pick it up. ( )

This book is being reviewed for the Library Thing Early Reviewers (although I am a little late in posting this review). This book really hits at the global effects of a person on those to whom they give care and also the effects on the caregiver. Healing and self-care, awareness of cues given to yourself by your body and soul, the cues and poignant moments of being a caregiver are ones that do transform a caregivers soul. It is a must read and re-read (as it has been for me) for caregivers be professionals, non-professionals, or loved ones. ( )

A good book for anyone in a caregiver role. ( )

I really wish that I had this book years ago when I was caregiver for moms, dads, husbands uncle. This book teaches you that it's ok to step back and take care of yourself. After years of taking care of everybody when the last one passed on my health went to the dogs. This book helps me to remember that the caregivers need compassion also. ( )
