This may come as a shock, but brilliant writing and clever wordplay do not a published author make. True, you'll actually have to write if you want to be a writer, but ultimately literary success is about much more than putting pen to paper (or fingers to keys). Before you snap your pencil in half with frustration, please consider the advice writer, teacher, and self-made lit star Ariel Gore offers in this useful guide to realizing your literary dreams. If you find yourself writing when you should be sleeping and scribbling notes on odd pieces of paper at every stoplight, you might as well enjoy the fruits of your labor. How to Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead is an irreverent yet practical guide that combines solid writing advice with guerrilla marketing and promotion techniques guaranteed to launch you into print--and into the limelight. You'll learn how to: * Reimagine yourself as a buzz-worthy artist and entrepreneur* Get your work and your name out in the world where other people can read it* Be an anthology slut and a brazen self-promoter* Apply real-world advice and experience from lit stars like Dave Barry, Susie Bright, and Dave Eggers to your own careerCheaper than an M.F.A. but just as informative, How to Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead is your catapult to lit stardom. Just don't forget to thank Ariel Gore for her inspiring, hands-on plan in the acknowledgments page of your first novel!… (mer)

Someone on one of my writing sites just recommended this. And, yay! the library carries it.

There are too many writing books out there. It's an industry. Go to the book store and you'll find workbooks that guarantees that it will help you write a bestselling novel (based on worksheets); Writer's Digest has a series of books focusing on each part of a story--setting, character, description, editing.

Yet from my experience, all of it say the same: Show don't tell; don't use adverbs; no one retorts, they say. It's what they teach you in MFA schools. Yet Ariel Gore's book, How To Become a Famous Author Before You're Dead, is different. It goes after what all writers, deep down, really want: You wanna be famous, I'll show you how. It's not just in the craft, argues Gore. It's in your deadlines, your people skills, your ability to say--Onwards!

Divided into 5 parts, covering everything from the basics of craft to book marketing, Gore never loses sight of her goal: to teach you how to be the rock star you always wanted to be. And to her, the writer is just that: a rock star deserving of all the fame in the world. She quotes authors throughout the book as inspiration and also manages to interview major literary stars--from Marc Acito (the gay Dave Barry), Dave Barry (who says he is the gay Dave Barry), Julia Alvarez, and an imaginary interveiw with Haruki Murakami.

Her advice is refreshing in a world of books that focus on the same principles as MFAs, that is: if you can't afford an MFA, you shouldn't be writing. Gore thinks otherwise, and she gives you 78 reasons to think so. Along the way, we not only get advice from an author of several books, we see how Gore came to be what she is. Gore is crafty (Study words, is #25), pragmatic (Learn to Talk, #67), revolutionary (Make your own books, #45), outlandish (Stand out on the corner in a gorilla mask and a tutu, #75). She is a rock star. And with this book, she shows you how you can do it too. Of course, there are heartbreaks and disappointments on the journey, but with Ariel, the journey is much more entertaining and helpful.

A must read for every writer. ( )

Fun & informative guide to writing, with a focus on getting your work published ASAP. ( )

The advice in this book is by no means earth-shattering. You'll recognize most of it from other writing guides. Example: Want to be a writer? Then write. (Sure sounds simple, but I have yet to develop a habit of writing every day.)

But unlike most other writing guides, this book will keep you laughing while it injects you with a good dose of writing wisdom. This book also has some great ideas for exercises—for example, go through a piece you wrote and remove all adjectives and adverbs, rewriting where necessary.

Gore includes several interviews with literary stars, some more interesting than others. One of my favorite interviews was with Ursula K. Le Guin: "Stories are like feral kittens. You have to be very patient and careful and quiet and put out little bits of chicken on the floor."

The chapters in this book are fairly short and the advice is so fun to read that I'm going to get a copy of this to own. ( )

It's sort of embarrassing to be caught reading this book, because of the title. Or I felt that way, anyhow. But I'm owning up to it here. It filled me with a kind of firey energy for both producing writing and getting it out into the world. In that sense, it was very useful. It's pragmatic and doesn't really romanticize "the writing life." I liked that. I also liked that it discussed both how to get published and also self-publishing of various forms. ( )
