For many that aren’t aware, this book draws inspiration from the real life events of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. I‘ve followed the case and watched the documentary and fictional Hulu series based on it. But though this debut novel may have similarities to real life events, it stands alone as an eye opening and chilling tale of prolonged child abuse, and a portrayal of an unhealthy maternal figure that I haven’t read about in a while. ⁣
I loved the alternating chapters between Rose Gold and Patty, and how much of the book focused on Rose Gold’s life after Patty was jailed, showing how she struggled to adjust to a “normal” life. Patty’s chapters dive into the mind of someone who is mentally ill and it’s an astonishing glimpse into how she thinks, feels and acts. I found myself rooting for Rose Gold the entire story and sympathized when others treated her unkindly. There is a twist at the end that I suspected and actually approved of when it arrived.⁣ ( )

Rose Gold was systematically poisoned during the first 18 years of her life. Her mother went to prison for the crime. Now her mother is due to be released, and Rose Gold allows her to come live with her and her baby boy, Adam. But not all is as it seems.
Through a series of flashbacks, the reader learns more about Rose Gold’s relationship with her mother, her friends, co-workers, and family. Who is the victim, really?
Disturbing!!
Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the copy of this book! Opinions are my own.
