Much better than I was expecting. Sweet, sad, hopeful. Duffy tries to be on his best behavior and stay in lineÂ¥but then a young woman tumbles through his window. It turns out she?s Carl?s granddaughterÂ¥one Duffy never knew he had. She has a black eye, an alcohol problem, and nowhere to stayÂ¥and Carl thinks she should camp out in their room. Duffy knows that getting caught hiding an alcoholic 20-something would earn him an immediate one-way ticket out of Centennial, and at first he tells Carl and Josie no way. But as he gets to know Josie and see the kind of pain he knows all too well, Duffy realizes he might finally have a chance to make up for all those wasted years. Duffy is cantankerous, gruff, and occasionally unkind, but his head is always an entertaining place to be. It?s clear that he cares deeply about his friends and fellow Centennial residents, and it?s impossible not to root for him. Fossey manages to depict the struggles of the elderly, whose concerns aren?t often examined in fiction, in a way that?s both respectful and entertaining.A moving, funny, and ultimately hopeful look at what makes life meaningful.

3.5 I listened to this selection thanks to the Seattle Public Library's fantastic "Your Next Five Books" program. In some ways, it's a dark book, but it also offers hope and some humor. I love that it was written by an Aerospace Engineer turned writer. ( )

Life at the Centennial Assisted Living Facility is described quite realistically in this book. Duffy Sinclair, an 88-year-old resident, and recovering alcoholic, describes the daily life and adventures of the residents. He creates a lot of the tension and commotion in the facility through his own irascibility. He doesn't have much time for most of the residents, but he cares deeply for his roommate, Carl, and wants to continue living there.
I didn't warm up to Duffy much during the entire book, and the humor fell flat for me in many instances. However, the details of daily life in an assisted living facility rang true, and I appreciated the description of experiences that residents were offered. I also thought that the descriptions of staff in such facilities were realistic with regard to the variation in their competence and empathy. ( )
