This is a book I wish was available in the early 70s. We knew I was "different" but nothing was diagnosed before I was about 45.

A must-have for parents of children on both ends of the Special Education spectrum, and everywhere in between. ( )

I do not have any children however this related to my nephew. He has been to 3 different schools with in his first 3 or 4 years of school. Finally they found the right fit at a school 45 minutes away but it caters to kids like him. He loves it and is happy to go to achool I have watched my sister struggle day after day and it was hard. I truly understand what both have gone through now and I qm recommending this book to my sister . amaizingly written. Thank you ( )

The large number of personal anecdotes shared help solidify the philosophy of the author regarding the purpose and receiving of services. It's clear that the author wants to help students who learn differently and their families navigate special education and get what is best, not just easy. Although there is a small section on high expectations on reading and math, which should be the case, very little practical advice is given to families on what they should be looking for or expecting regarding these during IEP meetings. I received a copy of this book from Early Reviewers. As a 29-year special educator, I was interested in the content in this book, intended to assist parents in navigating the complicated maze of special education. The book is user-friendly and does break down special education procedures in an easy-to-understand language for parents. One strength of this book is assisting the parents with preparing for a child's IEP meetings. A serious drawback, however, is that the terminology is not accurate for every state. Special ed law is a federal mandate but each state interprets the federal law within the state statutes. This book, therefore, does have inaccurate information for readers in many states. The author is relatable since she has been down this road with her own child. There are also chapters dedicated to setting high expectations for your child, which are inspiring for parents. While there is a satisfying amount of useful content in this book, the rating is penalized by the inaccuracy of information for many readers. 3 stars. ( )

Wow! As the grandmother of a grandson who has a "childhood apraxia of speech" diagnosis and whose parents have begun the journey of iep-enabled education, I found this book extremely helpful and plan to give it to my daughter and son-in-law the next time I'm with them. I also am a substitute teacher at a public middle school and often find myself working with students who have IEPs or 504s as part of their school experience. I love the way Ms. Fishman-Weaver emphasizes the importance of approaching each child's learning from a strengths-based perspective rather than a disability-based perspective. I think of the young people I know at our middle school and how their personalities delight me even as I occasionally tear my hair out at their childish behaviors. And how I tell myself each day that each of them is loved by their parents (at least I hope so) and has wonderful possibilities ahead of them as they grow. This is one of the most valuable things I see in this book. It will help families navigate all the special language and alphabet-soup world of services for special needs kids. But I also believe it should be read by every teacher out there as it joyfully encourages all of us to look at each individual child in new and different ways. This is a wonderful book - if you are in education or if you have a child who learns differently you should have your own copy! ( )
