Ann befriends Michael, a kid at school and her parents eventually adopt him. During his second summer at the Cape is a catastrophe for the 3 teenagers. Jump ahead 15 years and those disasters are the basis for the rest of the book. I really liked this story, and can’t wait to read more from this (hard to believe) first time author! I liked the toggle from past to present as each character reflected on their past. This book had me tearing up as the things they had been through were brought to light. This is a fantastic beach or rainy day read, just be sure to kleenex nearby. Michael comes to live with the Gordon family over the next few years, bonding with all of them and eventually getting adopted. I won’t spoil what happens next, but it definitely kept me turning pages. Author Christina Clancy can craft a twisted tale, for sure! Told in split timelines with the events of fifteen years ago, and the present, we see how Ann, Poppy and Michael have come to be where they are today and whether it’s possible to find your way back to family after terrible tragedy and decades of estrangement. ( ) KatKinney | Mar 3, 2022 | Clancy's writing style is incredibly detailed and engrossing and I felt like I could picture each of her main characters so well. They were layered and raw and while I couldn't always relate to them (Poppy) I felt like I could understand them because of Clancy's gifted character development. The Cape Cod setting was perfect for this family drama that reads like a beach read but has a depth that made it so much more than that. Through the shifting perspectives of Ann, Poppy, and Michael, secrets are revealed and family bonds are tested. The ending was particularly satisfying and I loved how the charactered connected and reconnected throughout time and the idea that family can sometimes be something you create on your own.
