"With its evocative Dublin setting, lyrical prose, tough but sympathetic heroine, and a killer twist in the plot, Sarah Stewart Taylor's The Mountains Wild should top everyone's must-read lists this year!" â?? New York Times bestselling author Deborah Crombie
In a series debut for fans of Tana French and Kate Atkinson, set in Dublin and New York, homicide detective Maggie D'arcy finally tackles the case that changed the course of her life.
Twenty-three years ago, Maggie D'arcy's family received a call from the Dublin police. Her cousin Erin has been missing for several days. Maggie herself spent weeks in Ireland, trying to track Erin's movements, working beside the police. But it was to no avail: no trace of her was ever found.
The experience inspired Maggie to become a cop. Now, back on Long Island, more than 20 years have passed. Maggie is a detective and a divorced mother of a teenager. When the Gardaí call to say that Erin's scarf has been found and another young woman has gone missing, Maggie returns to Ireland, awakening all the complicated feelings from the first trip. The despair and frustration of not knowing what happened to Erin. Her attraction to Erin's coworker, now a professor, who never fully explained their relationship. And her determination to solve the case, once and for all.
A lyrical, deeply drawn portrait of a woman - and a country - over two decades - The Mountains Wild introduces a compelling new mystery series from a mesmerizing author.
A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books
"Atmospheric and lyrical, The Mountains Wild is that rare thing â?? a riveting thriller with a beating heart. In this beautifully wrought portrait of love and family, secrets and lies, Sarah Stewart Taylor dives deep into character, all the while ratcheting up the suspense, page by gripping page, through to the stunning end." â?? I

Sarah Stewart Taylors most recent book, Stolen Child (the 4th book in the Maggie D'Arcy series was nominated for a 2024 G.P. Putnam Sue Grafton Memorial Award. Since there are only 4 books in the series, I decided to start at the beginning.

In this series launch from Taylor (the Sweeny St. George mysteries), Long Island, N.Y., homicide detective Maggie D’arcy learns that someone unearthed a scarf belonging to her cousin, Erin Flaherty, while scouring the Wicklow, Ireland, woods for missing schoolteacher Niamh Horrigan.

In 1993, when then 23-year-old Erin vanished from Dublin, Maggie flew over and spent weeks hounding the gardaí, retracing Erin’s steps, and interviewing her acquaintances before departing empty-handed. Authorities now suspect that Erin fell victim to a serial killer who may also be holding Niamh, so Maggie takes leave from work and returns to Dublin to resume digging, since solving Erin’s disappearance may facilitate Niamh’s rescue.

Maggie’s narrative alternates between past and present, her investigations unfolding in tandem, while infrequent flashbacks to the cousins’ childhood chronicle their turbulent relationship. Woolly plotting saps momentum and the denouement feels contrived, but Taylor’s affection for Irish geography, history, and culture suffuses the tale, adding texture and atmosphere. Fans of Elizabeth George should take note. Agent: Esmond Harmsworth, Aevitas Creative Management. (June) --Staff (Reviewed 04/13/2020) (Publishers Weekly)

This book struck me as a cross between a family saga, police procedural and a romance novel. While caring about finding Erin's fate, none of the characters, except maybe Roly, are endearing. I wouldn't run out to get the second book in the series. ( )

Lately, I’ve inadvertently chosen a string of books that have all been based in Ireland. I have no real ties to Ireland and though I know it is a beautiful place, I never really had a true desire to go there in person. These books have changed my mind, and The Mountains Wild was no different. Taylor has a remarkable ability to paint beautiful word pictures with entrancing imagery. You can really smell the peat fires and feel the moisture in the air (or maybe living in the PNW myself makes these things easy to conjure).

Along with my growing interest to see Ireland is my realization that I know very little about Irish history or politics. While I still have much to learn, Mountains is a quick study in some of the strife and conflict that has plagued the country for decades. It has piqued my interest for further study into its complicated past.

Scenery and background aside, the story itself is a masterpiece. Several plots intertwine to create one cohesive novel. The characters are raw and real, relatable with multiple layers and imperfections, traumas and complexities. No one person is without flaws, which leads the tale on a twisted path that denies the reader an inability to predict the outcome. Even if you guess something right, you’re still going to be surprised.
The Mountains Wild is a gorgeous thriller and I look forward to future works from Sarah Stewart Taylor.

I received a complementary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )

Stewart combines a solid procedural with Maggie D'Arcy, an American detective, and a cold case/murder squad in Ireland with a family story and even a bit of romance. It also combines a cold case, Maggie's cousin with a current case. Well done and the cold case endng was a complete surprise to me. ( )

I was browsing the bookshelves at my local library last week and picked up a book that sounded good. I didn’t know the author, but Deborah Crombie recommended it and that was good enough for me! I started reading The Mountains Wild by Sarah Stewart Taylor on Friday evening and only reluctantly put it down for other activities all weekend long. Fortunately, there is a sequel!

Maggie D’Arcy is a police detective on Long Island. Her cousin went missing in Ireland and the book segues between an initial police search and a follow-up. There are well-developed, interesting personalities; Irish history; and an intriguing plot. I definitely recommend reading this book, but be prepared to set aside all other activities for at least 2 days! ( )
