I'm slightly above beginner level when it comes to SQL. I can build queries from scratch for most problems I'm trying to solve. But, for someone at my level, this book is an invaluable resource. I use it as a starting point to figure out why my query isn't working. That knowledge then allows me to go to another SQL reference or to Stack Overflow.

I highly recommend this book. ( )

Excellent book. I actually know SQL and have a great deal of experience with it (18 years). So, I'm very qualified to review this book. I haven't worked with SQL, though, in two years. Which is why I wanted this book. A refresher. Plus, I think even the experienced can learn something from someone who has written about a topic exceedingly well. I did learn a great deal. The author writes in a way that is lacking from nearly every technical book on the market. His explanations, style of writing, everything, are fantastic. I only wished he wrote all the technical books I needed to read or want to own! Fantastic guide to have on hand. I have it on my computer and on my phone so that I'm never without out. ( )

I haven't read this book because I requested it to use for reference when I need to use SQL on a project. I have some SQL experience so it appears it might have been useful but the tablet I downloaded it to died and I had to buy a new one, and download link no longer works.

I came to this book with no SQL experience, and very little database experience at all--but I have moderate experience with HTML, Excel, and a little tiny bit of programming. The guide is very well organized and easy to get into, from the beginning (how to get started with a free version of a SQL program) and forward through clear exercises of increasing complexity. Highly recommended to anyone interested in getting their feet wet in SQL! ( )

"It's not where you start but where you finish" is a good rule, but where you start often determines where you finish.

I came to this book with very limited knowledge of SQL but a great deal of knowledge about relational databases in general. What I wanted was a book that would help me translate what I already knew into SQL concepts.

I'll get the bad news out of the way up front: For someone in my situation, this book was not very good. There is a brief introductory section on the fundamentals of relational databases, but it's much too brief to really explain them. That's probably good for someone who has no database background at all, but for an experienced hand, it was not at all enlightening. The idea of tables and records and fields is elementary, and the book doesn't really give much information about data types or anything like that. So it isn't a good reference, either. I wish, too, that it had said more about the various flavors of SQL.

So: I cannot review how this book will work for someone who is not only new to SQL but is new to databases. If you are an old database hand, I don't think this book is for you. Too much beginning stuff; too little about how to translate FileMaker or Access or Fourth Dimension (anyone remember that one?) into SQL.

If, however, you are truly new to the field, it seems to me that it's a pretty good starter guide. The sample database makes good sense (despite the fact that it denies the existence of a "traditional folk" music genre, which made it a very irritating database for me to play with!). The examples seem to proceed in good order, making it clear, e.g., how dependent SQL is on the SELECT statement. I think someone trying to learn SQL from this book will end up with the ability to make and use a functional SQL database, as long as he or she doesn't go too crazy saying, "I already know about that; what about...."

I do think it needed somewhat more information about how to work with DB Browser, the SQL database program used in the book. Several times, I clicked in the wrong place and had a dreadful time getting out. And the installation video, at least for Macintosh, really needed to be edited to be clearer. Indeed, the whole procedure for downloading the book was needlessly convoluted.

Which brings up another problem: You can get this book in print, but if you get it electronically, the only versions are the e-book formats, MOBI (Kindle) and EPUB (everything else). No PDF. This was a real problem for me, because important stuff got spread across multiple pages with no way to view it all at once. And, sometimes, you need to devote your full screen to viewing the database itself, so it would be nice to be able to print the relevant pages of the book in their proper format, not in whatever way your stupid e-book reader prefers. So I might be tempted to buy this in print rather than electronically.

Those aren't trivial caveats, but they aren't huge problems, either. If you are a good analytical thinker, but a complete database newcomer, this will probably be a good book for you.
