"An indelible and haunting new novel that explores the loss of childhood, intergenerational conflict, and humanity's complacency in the face of its own demise. Lydia Millet's multilayered new novel - her first since the National Book Award Longlist Sweet Lamb of Heaven -- follows a group of children and their families on summer vacation at a lakeside mansion. The teenage narrator Eve and the other children are contemptuous of their parents, who spend the days and nights in drunken stupor. This tension heightens when a great storm arrives and throws the house and its residents into chaos. Named for a picture Bible given to Eve's little brother Jack, A Children's Bible is loosely structured around events and characters that often appear in collections of Bible stories intended for young readers. These narrative touchstones are imbedded in a backdrop of environmental and psychological distress as the children reject the parents for their emotional and moral failures-in part as normal teenagers must, and in part for their generation's passivity and denial in the face of cataclysmic change. In A Children's Bible, Millet offers brilliant commentary on the environment and human weakness and a vision of what awaits us on the other side of Revelations"--… (mer)

Moral of the story? If you live in a beautiful garden, don't ruin it or leave it. A narrator named Eve, a birth in a stall, an animal rescue during an apocalyptic flood? Yep, there was little effort to disguise this parable. And yet, it was well written, witty, frightening, and full of adolescent angst, and the prophetic voices of innocent children. Intrigued? Well worth the read! ( )

A satirical and darkly funny allegory in which the reader will recognize the many biblical allusions. The story concerns a group of teens on vacation in a rented house with their woefully inadequate and hedonistic parents (referred to only as the "parents," "mother," or "father"). A storm interrupts the vacation, and the children must fend for themselves. If you are of an older generation and reading this doesn't make you feel uncomfortable, you're not paying attention. Millet is sounding the warning bell on climate change and giving us all a sharp poke for our denial of what is happening in front of our eyes and our refusal to inconvenience ourselves to protect future generations. Pair this with Leave the World Behind, which tackles the same subject using a similar framework. ( )

A very imaginative novel centering a group of children who have been separated from their parents after a pretty apocalyptic storm and flood. They bond together and go on creating a new home and do quite well without parental guidance. The Bible connection was that one of the boys recently received a Bible as a gift and sees parallels with their situation - the flood, Noah's Ark etc. and other similarities crop up. This is a wonderful novel and I can see why is received all the acclaim it did, Parents not needed. ( )

This entry from the 2021 Tournament of Books shortlist is an allegorical story about a group of children trying to survive the aftermath of a disastrous storm, while their neglectful and incompetent parents are rendered helpless. The author's real message, about our complacency regarding the climate crisis, is disturbing and hard-hitting. ( )

I was happy to find this on Hoopla because I find the cover creepy. And even though I love post-apocalyptic novels, I am not a huge fan of biblical allegory, which this book certainly is. And I understood the parents not taking care of their children, the flood, Jack's saving animals, and the owner/healer--the rest of the allegory went over my head.

While Eve's voice sounds very mature--the older kids' ages aren't given, but they are definitely teens, maybe even college students--I am sure the awkwardness of that is also relevant to the allegory. So I don't fully get that either, but this is also narrated by Eve at a future time, so maybe she is older?

So, this was OK, but I know I missed stuff because I do not know the bible inside and out, and i have no interest in knowing the bible inside and out.

Xe Sands' narration was excellent, I'm not sure I would have finished this if I read a physical book. ( )
