I wasn’t sure about Jessica at first, but Gabriel (totally swoon worthy) saw inside her and showed us that they were right for each other. Great story with the Westcotts banding together as usual; I seriously want to be adopted by this family. ( ![]() Another fine entry in the Westcott series. If you haven't read the previous books, Jessica Archer became the sister of a duke when he inherited due to the illegitimacy (due to bigamy) of the previous holder of the title. That discredited gentleman's sister was Jessica's best friend and she vows not to marry since Abby is disgraced and they can't make their come-outs together. Now Abby is married and Jessica decides perhaps it's not too late for marriage for herself. Mysterious Gabriel Thorne sets his sights on her and sets about romancing her. However, Gabriel has his own issues and Jessica is the perfect woman to help solve them. You really can't go wrong with any of Ms. Balogh's books and the Westcott series have been great reads, all of them. I was happy for Jessica and I liked Gabriel a lot as the hero. The rest of the extended family make appearances which are always nice for readers of the series though possibly confusing if this is the first one you've read (there are a lot of Wescott's and their connections). Another lovely romance by Ms. Balogh. I liked seeing all of the couples from the previous books in this series but maybe they took up too much space from the chief protagonists. I felt like there wasn't enough to connect with in their characters, This is very unlike previous books by Balogh that I've read. It was an enjoyable book but not as good as most of her others. I've read and enjoyed Balogh's Westcott series. Though it was lovely to finally see Jessica find happiness, I had a hard time shaking my initial dislike of her based on previous books. I felt like she was never a fully fleshed out heroine- I never really understood what made her tick. Gabriel on the other hand was a delightful hero, and I did enjoy the way they came together as friends rather than found love in one mighty and unexpected flash. Balogh is a wonderful writer and I find myself hoping the next book focuses on Estelle who I have always enjoyed. I really enjoyed this one. But I will say I the reason that it is a 4 star instead of a 5 star is that I felt the book spent way too much time going over all of the Westcott family and their business rather than on Jessica and Gabriel actually interacting with one another and falling in love. I love that she issued him a challenge to romance her, but I never quite felt that Gabriel rose to that challenge. He sent her roses and ignored her for a bit and wham bam, that did the trick? I just feel that if we hadn't spent as much time catching up with everyone else's business then we would have had more time to enjoy the back and forth between our two main characters. And Gabriel would have had more time to romance Jessica vs what actually happened.
