Eighteen months after Hillary suffered a personal tragedy, she is throwing herself into her work to try to get over it. Former soldier Gareth Proctor joins her team and finds himself quickly growing to enjoy his new environment. The first cold case he works on is the murder of Andrew Feeley. In 2012, this twenty-one-year-old was found dead in the woods near his home, killed by a single stab wound to the chest from his own knife. Andrew was extremely unpopular. He was a drug dealer, pimp and bully. His stepdad was one of the main suspects, as they hated each other and often came to blows. Other suspects include Toby Truman and his mother Debbie. Andrew was responsible for getting Toby hooked on drugs. Given Andrew's criminal background, his murder is thought to be drug-related. But Hillary's not buying it -- she knows it's personal. And a search of the Feeleys' garden turns up some chilling evidence.… (mer)

Hillary Greene has been back at work in the Crime Review Team since the death of her partner some eighteen months ago. Today she has a new team member, Gareth Proctor, 36, ex-army sergeant, discharged due to injuries received, and a new case.
Eight years previously Andrew Freeley, 21, was found dead. Generally disliked, and known as a drug dealer and pimp, it doesn't come as a surprise to Hillary that nobody really cares who killed him.
Another enjoyable and well-written crime story is this series, with its new characters added to the tenacious and caring Greene.
Received an ARC from the publisher ( )

Thoroughly enjoyed Hillary's Back as I have all the other books in the series. I love how the characters all gel and work together well, giving the story a good flow. ( )

Turns out that I've only read the first DI Hillary Greene book (Murder on the Oxford Canal originally pub 2004). This is the very newest being published in 2020 and I am amazed at what I've missed!
Now Hillary is a civilian consultant (no longer sworn staff) following an impeccable career with a truly impressive solution record and the mind crushing grief known to those of us who have weathered sudden widowhood. Her immediate coworkers are also civilians: Claire is a twenty year veteran of the force now a civilian due to budget cuts and Gareth who had his further army expectations ended at thirty five by an IED but is more than capable of doing the due diligence and investigative work. Now the team is responsible for investigation of cold cases sent down to them in spite of the budget issues familiar to law enforcement worldwide. This case involves a victim who was not only a drug dealer in a somewhat upscale village, but a rather nasty person as well. Good story that only goes to show that it all takes due diligence and a spark of something extra to solve homicides.
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Joffe Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
(Now I just have to read a few more in series) ( )

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

Poor Hillary - still on her canal boat, her love life having taken (another) tragic turn. Unless my memory has failed me, she has two new people working for her, so I assume the series will be continuing. This was very readable, as they always are, although the prevailing mood was a bit downbeat and depressing. Reliable. ( )
