From the New York Times bestselling author of Uprooted and Spinning Silver comes the story of an unwilling dark sorceress who is destined to rewrite the rules of magic. I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I'm concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I'm not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don't need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts, I'm probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I'll level mountains and kill untold millions, make myself the dark queen of the world. At least, that's what the world expects me to do. Most of the other students in here would be delighted if Orion killed me like one more evil thing that's crawled out of the drains. Sometimes I think they want me to turn into the evil witch they assume I am. The school itself certainly does. But the Scholomance isn't getting what it wants from me. And neither is Orion Lake. I may not be anyone's idea of the shining hero, but I'm going to make it out of this place alive, and I'm not going to slaughter thousands to do it, either. Although I'm giving serious consideration to just one. With flawless mastery, Naomi Novik creates a heroine for the ages-a character so sharply realized and so richly nuanced that she will live on in hearts and minds for generations to come.… (mer)

What a treat! This isn't magic school trope. It feels more like The Call then Rowling. Great round characters and intricate multifaceted relationships. Incredible world building. I'm so ready for the next book. ( )

Cool world building, somewhat gritty. Much closer to the ya border than I've read in a while, which is fine but all the characters were a little flat. It's not that much fun when the two main characters are so overpowered so the two climaxes just sort of happen and then fall away. It was so unabashedly concise there and so lengthy other places that it must have been on purpose, I guess the action wasn't the purpose of the book.

I'm not even sure there was much character growth, she just started having friends even though she didn't change much ( )

I mean, in general the wizardly boarding school setting was already a bit of a cliché even when Ursula Le Guin did it, never mind J.K. Rowling. But Novik takes a couple of interesting new turns. First, the school is infested by evil magical creatures which in a normal year eat or otherwise kill a large percentage of the students. Second, our protagonist is deeply cynical, rude to everyone, and doesn't even try to be a good girl, just alive. Third, the brutal outworkings of the class system in determining who lives and who dies are a crucial element of the plot. On top of this there's the usual plot of classroom politics and teenage angst, and one slightly wonders about all the parents who send their kids to a boarding school where their chances of survival are so low, but I liked it a lot. I really enjoyed most of this book. The magic system is fascinating and fresh. The school itself is terrifying, and all of those children will be dealing with PTSD for years and years. I enjoyed El's narration. It felt very natural, and I loved her method of explaining everything. But part of the problem is that she explains way too much, and doesn't show enough. I wanted to see more examples of her power, and her badass abilities. In that regard, I felt like the ending was a bit anti-climactic, and that the true emotional climax of the novel was when she truly became friends with Aadhya and Liu. One of the problems with basing your magical enclaves regionally, like the author does in this world, is that you can easily fall into stereotypical traps based on race. I cringed so hard at the description of the mal that infests "dreadlocks". This does nothing to lessen the stereotype that locs are dirty and unhygienic. It is rooted in racism and should not have been included in the book. In fact, just explaining that most people in this school have short hair for a very specific reason is enough of a description, and it should have stopped there. That being said, the author has apologized for these passages, and I feel like she is sincere about it. Overall, I still liked the book. I enjoyed the setting, the magic system, the fight against classism, the horror aspects, El's attitude, and the banter between her and Orion. I read this fairly quickly and enjoyed almost every part of it, except for those bits mentioned above, but I am a sucker for a magical school story. I am definitely interested in seeing where this story goes next. ( )

I liked this book much more than I thought I would! The magic world in this book is really creepy and dangerous and intense. This is a world in which for many people it would be way better to not have magic, because if you do you have to go to this magic school and the odds of actually graduating (read: surviving) are like 1/10. I don't know that I'd be able to make it through the crucible! I also like how this is a send-up of Harry Potter and other teen fantasy novels with a Mary Sue/Gary Stu protagonist who can do no wrong and is always at the center of things. ( )

it's too easy to call people evil instead of their choices, and that lets people justify making evil choices, because they convince themselves that it's okay because they're still good people overall, inside their own heads.
