Masculine domination is so deeply ingrained in our unconscious thatwe hardly perceive all of its dimensions. It is so much in linewith our expectations that we struggle to call it fully intoquestion. Ter baseado boa parte do livro em citações de obras de Virginia Woolf, sobretudo Rumo ao Farol, ajudou muito ao Bourdieu a me ganhar e pautar a dominação simbólica a partir de um inconsciente androcêntrico fechou para meu encantamento. Le propre des dominants est d'être en mesure de faire reconnaitre leur manière d'être particulière comme universelle. La définition de l'excellence est, en toute matière, chargée d'implications masculines qui ont la particularité de ne pas apparaitre comme telles. La définition d'un poste, surtout d'autorité, inclut toutes sortes de capacités et d'aptitudes sexuellement connotées. (p. 89)
En fait, il est clair que l'éternel, dans l'histoire, ne peut être autre chose que le produit d'un travail historique d'éternisation. Ce qui signifie que, pour échapper complètement à l'essentialisme, il ne s'agit pas de nier les permanences et les invariants, qui font incontestablement partie de la réalité historique; il faut reconstruire l'histoire du travail historique de déshistoricisation ou, si l'on préfère, l'histoire de la (re)création continuée des structures objectives et subjectives de la domination masculine qui s'est accomplie en permanence, depuis qu'il y a des hommes et des femmes, et à travers laquelle l'ordre masculin s'est trouvé continument reproduit d'âge en âge. (p. 115)
Le fait que le travail domestique de la femme n'a pas d'équivalent en argent contribue en effet à le dévaluer, à ses yeux mêmes, comme si ce temps sans valeur marchande était sans importance et pouvait être donné sans contrepartie, et sans limites, d'abord aux membres de la famille, et surtout aux enfant, mais aussi à l'extérieur, pour des tâches bénévoles, à l'Église, dans des institutions charitables ou, de plus en plus, dans des associations ou des partis. Souvent cantonnées dans des activités non rémunérées et peu portées de ce fait à penser en termes d'équivalence du travail en argent, les femmes sont, beaucoup plus souvent que les hommes, disposées au bénévolat, religieux ou caritatif notamment. (p. 135).
Seule une action politique prenant en compte réellement tous les effets de domination qui s'exercent à travers la complicité objective entre les structures incorporées (tant chez les femmes que chez les hommes) et les structures des grandes institutions où s'accomplit et se reproduit non seulement l'ordre masculin, mais aussi tout l'ordre social pourra, sans doute à long terme, et à la faveur des contradictions inhérentes aux différents mécanismes ou institutions concernés, contribuer au dépérissement progressif de la domination masculine (p. 158).
