This took a little to really get going, but once it did, it was an excellent ride. ( )

Ok, I have a LOT to say about this book. I went in with Dark Academia hopes…and while I obviously read this book voraciously in the course of two days, that’s because it was great until the last 20 pages.

First is the big issue of characters that seem to only exist to act as red herrings, namely Henry (who had such potential to be a terrifying character) and Fred (whose background perfectly fit the letter-writer’s backstory…really how many people in Cambridge had abusive fathers who killed their beloved pets?!) I was hoping for characters that can act as red herrings but exist for a plot purpose, and for me, Fred and Henry were only there to confuse us…they were not real characters.

My biggest issue with this book, however, was the alleged “big twist,” which is that Sebastian is a patricidal rapist of of Zoe (whom he allegedly loves…but had sex with when she was 15!!), and desired to murder Mariana, his wife. Sure, I guess it’s *technically* possible that this twist exists, but as readers we were given NO background evidence (except for suspicious letters that honestly could have been forged from the clearly mentally unstable Zoe…why was that never explored as an option?!) that Sebastian is anything but the loving late husband of Mariana. Besides the fact that Mariana is a therapist and should have noticed warning signs, how did Sebastian fake his honeymoon phase love that he and Mariana shared for 3 wonderful years at Cambridge? Plus, he seemed infatuated with Mariana BEFORE he ever met the young Zoe, when he first saw Mariana after he fell in the river by Cambridge. If I’m to believe this twist, I just wanted more external evidence since this is allegedly a detective novel.

I still gave this book 3 stars because it had me on the edge of my seat until the ending. I was willing to forgive the flat and static characters of Henry and Fred so long as the ending was great…but since for me the ending felt like an attempt to shock rather than a believable twist, I give it 3 stars instead of 4-5. This book was an emotional whirlwind of events tied to pieces of Ancient Greek Philosophy where life and death are practically in the same sentence.

Edward Fosca is a Greek Tragedy Professor at Cambridge University and has organized a secret society of seven beautiful female students known as "The Maidens." Each one is from a family of prestige and wealth. One girl has been violently murdered and her best friend, Zoe, is deep in grief. She calls upon her Aunt Mariana who raised her after her parents died. Mariana quickly decides to stop everything and come to St. Christopher's to help Zoe get through this period of sadness.

Mariana was originally from Greece with a challenging relationship with her father and mother. She met her husband at the same school and became a therapist. Her father built a very successful shipping business and when he passed, she inherited his fortune. She was very happy until a year ago when her beloved husband, Sebastian, died along the coast of one of the Greek Islands on a visit together.

We are reminded at the University of the presence of the great British poet, Alfred Tennyson, with his famous quote: "tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." Mariana returns to the days when she was a young student to comfort Zoe. As she starts to ask questions, she finds herself involved with the investigation after not one but three girls are now murdered. It is her fear her niece could be next as she tries to keep her safe while taking a glimpse of her own past.

I couldn't wait to read another book by Alex Michaelides as I loved, "The Silent Patient." It's a fast read with lots of surprises including two characters that are included from his previous book. I thought I had the end figured out but was totally off. This twisted love story with intense acts of drama was in its own way a spiritual awakening.

My thanks to Alex Michaelides, Celadon Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read this advance copy to be released on June 15, 2021. ( )

Not great, not horrible. It was a little slow moving. The main character has some issues and comes of whiney sometimes. We get it, she lost her husband in a freak accident and his sudden death haunts her throughout the entire book. The best part of the book was the very end. The twist did catch me by surprise. I honestly didn't know who the killer was until the last couple chapters. The ending was what saved this book. ( )

Any worries I had about a sophomore slump were ended right from the start. Loved the Easter egg for his fans. This will be one of the hottest beach reads of the Summer. ( )
