The Kinder, Gentler Military is a devastating critique of how and why the military--the most tradition-bound, masculine institution in the United States--spent the 1990s in a tortured attempt to reform its time-proven warrior culture in favor of a new, politically correct value system, a system that is decimating morale in our armed forces. She then shows why the complete integration of women into the military is physically and sociologically impossible and how the pursuit of this unrealistic ideal is profoundly demoralizing to soldiers of both sexes and a sure setup for battlefield disaster. The author believes that the Armed Forces are making a mistake trying to integrate servicwomen so completely into the fighting force. She believes that women should not serve in combat, but also that women are currently serving in too many combat related assignments and that they are weakening America's fighting force. The book is not fottnoted, however there is a list of sources consulted in the back. This is an opinion piece and does not qualify as an academic study.

Useful for the historical information, and the state of the controversy at the time of writing (2000).
I don't remember enough at this late date since reading it to give any more details. ( )

Gutmann has a valid point concerning military gender norming. Unfortunately when the facts don't support her theory she isn't opposed to lying to spread the word.
