Fantasy. Juvenile Fiction. Juvenile Literature. HTML:

Angie Sage, New York Times bestselling author of the Septimus Heap series, crafts a fantasy world where enchantment is illegal, Oracles knit octopuses, wizards run around in soggy underpants, and one girl is on a mission to save Enchantment and Enchanters, which might just save the kingdom.

Alex has a set of Enchanted cards. When she flutters her fingers above them, something magical happens: the cards come alive and create moving pictures of what is now and what is yet to come. But Enchantment is illegal in the city of Luma, and those who practice it are imprisoned forever in the Vaultsdark dungeons deep below the city.

When Alex is betrayed by her foster sister Zerra, she knows she is in great danger. With the help of her little foster brother, Louie, she makes a daring escape.

But Alex discovers she is not safe outside Luma either. Here lurk deadly Hauntings that seek out those who practice magic: Enchanters and their children. The Hauntings take many forms and Alex is hunted by a giant bird of prey, the Hawke, a murderous Night Wraith called the Grey Walker, and the eerie Xin.

But why do the Hauntings haunt Alex?

Alex doesn't believe she's an Enchanter's Child, but she has no idea who her parents are. Her precious Enchanted cards are her only clue to her true identity, and she becomes determined to find out who she is. And, while she is at it, to get rid of the deadly Twilight Hauntings forever.

Praise for Angie Sage's Twilight Hauntings:

"Intricate worldbuilding, richly evocative settings, nuanced characters, deftly woven plotting, and wry humor. An unmitigated delight." Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Fans of fantasy and adventure will snap this up and eagerly await the sequel." School Library Journal (starred review)

"Sage deftly crafts an endearing and familiar fantasy story, expertly characterizing distinct, extreme personalities. Fantasy fans will highly anticipate the next steps in Alex's journey in the projected sequel of the Enchanter's Child duology." Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Gr 4–7—Enchanters are banned in Luma, which is unfortunate for Alex because she just might be one. Having lived
with a foster family for 10 years, Alex secretly reads magical cards until she's discovered and must escape. What
follows is a series of fantastic events exploring greed, discrimination, and power in a tween-friendly high fantasy
setting. Readers witness not only the compelling elevation of heroes but also the birth of a villain. At once
comfortably familiar and surprisingly refreshing, this is a fantasy world readers will be sure to revisit.
NB: This book is first of a series.

I love Angie Sage’s _Septimus Heap_ series, so I’ve been eyeing this new book, but I was leery, because I thought it might be too dark for me.

Alex is a wonderful heroine with a mysterious background who opens the story by scrying a “monster” in her hex stones for a boy in the marketplace. (I loved who the monster turned out to be and all the other twists that are paid off later in this story.) “Seeds” for upcoming books are hinted at throughout the book and I’m looking forward to finding out what happens in Book Two.

There’s a Cinderella feeling to the Alex’s home life that takes an interesting and hopeful twist that reminds me why I like Sage’s books so much. She’s generous and forgiving to her characters even while she’s throwing a variety of dangerous magical creatures at them so they have to run for their lives while they face up to past mistakes. None of this underlying story fabric feels mechanical or moralistic, because Sage is a consummate storyteller. She makes me want to know what will happen to every character in the story--and she doesn’t disappoint.

Which is why I’m looking for the second book now even though I’m a bit perturbed with the wily old enchanter’s choice at the very end of this book! Where is that Book Two? ( )

Twilight Hauntings is a great book for those who love magic, mystery, and adventure. It tells the story of a magical orphan named Alex and is the first book in the Enchanter's Child series. Full of great characters, an engaging plot, sadness, and humor, once you begin reading this book, you will not want to put it down! ( )
