In a time when technology can reveal the darkest of secrets, there's only one place to hide a crime of passion - in the heart. The first victim was found lying on a sidewalk in the rain. The second was murdered in her own apartment building. Police lieutenant Eve Dallas had no problem finding connections between the two crimes. Both victims were beautiful and highly successful women. Their glamorous lives and loves were the talk of the city. And their intimate relations with men of great power and wealth provided Eve with a long list of suspects including her own lover, Roarke. As a woman, Eve was compelled to trust the man who shared her bed. But as a cop, it was her job to follow every lead, to investigate every scandalous rumor, to explore every secret passion, no matter how dark. Or how dangerous.… (mer)

Taking place 50 years in the future, Eve Dallas is investigating a murderer who targets successful, powerful women. Good but not for the faint of heart

Police lieutenant Eve Dallas is back and tracking down a serial killer in the second book of JD Robb's "In Death" series. Once again, Eve's love interest, the mysterious and very rich Roarke, initially appears to be the link between the murders. Unfortunately for both Eve and Roarke, this strains their relationship to the point that ending it may be a very real possibility. Fortunately for Eve there are far more suspects to concentrate on this time around. Eve is also a person with a troubled past, who overcame extremely difficult circumstances and became an excellent cop.

As the story opens, Lt. Eve Dallas is discovered at the scene of a shocking homicide. Late that night, Prosecuting Attorney Cicely Towers, a powerful and widely recognized star in the District attorney's office, has been found with her throat brutally slashed in a nasty neighborhood far from her office and her home. Eve's investigation is complicated by the close friendship of Cicely's ex-husband Marco Angelini and their adult children with her boss, Commander Whitney and his increasing concern as Eve's investigation concentrates on the family. A further complication which brings into question Dallas' objectivity is the revelation that the Angelini family, Cicely Towers and Eve's lover Roarke are are partners in a business venture. Additional murders soon occur which bear the signature trademark of the killer, and media pressure intensifies on Eve given the visible lack of progress in her investigation. After several twists and false clues the story suddenly rockets towards a violent climax where it is not clear that all our favorite characters will survive.

I plan to continue to read this long running series. They have interesting plots and are full of colorful characters. Can't wait to see what happens in the next one. ( )

To continue or not to continue...

I enjoyed this book enough to continue, but not enough to have dive right in for the next 4 or so years till I catch up. Sometimes I need a mystery-ish pace. Most of the time I just like this book when Roarke is in it. (Although I became a quick fan of peabody, and I'm curious if she'll have a story arc as well).

I think I'll deem this series on hold. Not to detract from the diehards, I'm just not a mystery/suspense fanatic and small doses are quite enough for me. And would it kill people to have men be the victims every so often?

Oh, and I'm not a fan of a twist that isn't foreshadowed or somewhat clear, but I also should know in >90 pages (not sure what point really) who the murderer is. It's kind of like on Law&Order when you see the B list actor who is familiar and you know "it's 100% that person. They are kind of famous"
Not fun-unless the journey getting there makes it worth it as is the case in many others ( )

Glory In Death is the second in the “In Death” and slowly but surely I am making my way through this series but boy is it intimidating, I am just trying not to think about it too much (LOL) but this story continues on with our characters Eve and her man Roarke. I have to say this had a slightly less romantic focus as the first book, not by much but not as much as I was expecting either but still a fabulous read for sure. I definitely am getting why so many are drawn to these books as I am becoming drawn into this world that J.D. Robb has created here.

In Glory In Death, Eve is tasked on with another major under the focus of the media lime light type of case. When an high profile woman gets killed and this woman is connected to her boss, she knows that this will be a tough one to crack with lots of emotional upheaval to work through and Eve will have to really focus on staying objective and true to form in how she solves crimes and goes after the killer. But during all of this, the man she happens to be falling in love with is a suspect as he is connected and Eve becomes divided on being a cop and a girlfriend. And their relationship becomes tested when Eve has to delve deep into hidden issues into why she is pushing Roarke away and fearing commitment to him. But as Eve gets closer to finding the killer, Eve will need to face up to hidden fears and unresolved issues.

Glory in Death was definitely a solid read, I did have a hard time sticking with this one. The first one I couldn’t put down but this one did take a bit longer to get through. I think a major aspect of that is wanting more interactions between Roarke and Eve and didn’t happen as often as I would have liked. But still a fabulous book and great plot line that this author develops in this story. I did find myself hooked in this particular mystery though, I was so intrigued to see “who” the villain actually was and boy J.D. Robb really throws a curveball in having it be someone you least expect it to be, I was so OFF the mark on that one. 🙂 But I do adore an author that can keep me on my toes and this author definitely did that for me.

It was humiliating to admit, even to himself, that every time he went away to see to business, a seed of fear rooted in his heart that she would have shaken herself loose of him by the time he returned. The simple fact was, he needed the one thing she had refused him. A commitment.

Now I did find the romantic elements that come into play here so unique and offered so much hidden depths that I love seeing in a romance despite not many of them. Makes up for it a bit I think. We see so much growth in this relationship. Love that Eve has to resolve some inner issues within herself if she doesn’t want to lose Roarke. We really see her face up to herself and how she has been pushing him away without even realizing it fully. And she does have to learn to fight for her man and love it when a heroine needs to do that. Quite frankly we see how much he fights for her, accepts and support her, and I wanted to see the same from her as well and so happy I was able to see that.

Overall I found Glory In Death to be a stimulating addition to the series and I am becoming more hoooked on this writing style and eager to try out book three this week!! ( )

I think this Eve Dallas series is going to be my guilty pleasure. The time frame is 50 years from now - just enough different to merit noting but not so much that it's hard to understand. Eve is a cop and in this episode, she's trying to find a throat slasher who's going after some pretty high profile women. I've just ordered the next two in the series. It's like guaranteed good reading. ( )

At least this time, with this murder, she knew he had an alibi. At the time Cicely Towers was having her throat slashed, Roarke had been fu***ng the hell out of the investigating officer.
