"A huge swath of Americans see the rest of the country building a future that doesn't have a place for them. It's no wonder they'd rather burn it all down. But the fire can be stopped by Americans who act now to protect their country and its democracy"--

This is a sharply-observed commentary on the consequences of the Trump presidency, on both the nation as a whole and on both parties. Politically, David Frum is center-right, while I'm more center-left, so there were plenty of minor points of contention, but I found an awful I fully agreed with as well. Frum goes through the issues of the day one-by-one, both identifying what Trump has gotten wrong and (occasionally) right, and offering suggestions for how we might recover from the substantial damage inflicted on our society by this unfit leader and his political accomplices. The scale of the challenge ahead of us is daunting, and recovery from this fever-dream of an administration will be slow and viciously-contested, but there is hope that it can lead to a better future. Atlantic editor, former presidential speechwriter and longtime conservative commentator David Frum wastes no time nor space to convince you of what you hopefully need little convincing of—that the presidency of Donald Trump was a mistake, and if we're not careful, one that we run of risk of never recovering from.

An apocalypse, as hinted at by the title and further expounded on by Frum, isn't an end but a beginning. We've long been conditioned to associate the apocalypse with end-of-days scenarios and dystopian predictions. Frum argues, however, that the classical definition of the word "apocalypse" in fact means "a renewal." This is what he sees and hopes for America's future in the disastrous wake of Donald Trump's presidency. ( )

Written by conservative David Frum, this is an excellent overview on what the Trump presidency has done to the United States - none of it good. In the first part Frum looks at why Trump was elected and how he has harmed our nation, both at home and internationally. In the second part he offers constructive advice on how to cure these situations with some practical, specific steps. He does warn that while there are opportunities to repair all that has been harmed, a second term for Trump will make these opportunities impossible. As a fellow Republican, I share this fear and hope Americans vote this year not out of fear exaggerated by Trump and his allies, but out of a love for our country and hope for the future. ( )

David Frum has provided the best written indictment of the Trump presidency available. He succinctly describes the many things that the Trump presidency has damaged or destroyed and does this from a very conservative point of view. The second half of the book then provides his suggestions for what needs to be done to repair this damage. ( )
