Another Life is Possible is difficult book to categorize. It is part coffee table book, part history, and part explanation of the Bruderhof. The book provides the stories of various members of the Bruderhof. While most of these stories are from present day members, there are a significant number of life-stories from historical member. This book allows people to see into the life of a community of people who live together in community because they have rejected the norms and values of current society. This book focuses on the economic and social values of the community. I would have two points to criticize this book, first, it does seem to provide a very positive view of the community, which is expected for a book that is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the community. Second, I would have also like to have seen a bit more on how they handle diversity within the community. What do members have to agree on to join, where is their difference, and how do they handle difference when it appears. However, it is an interesting book that but I am not sure if this is the best book to introduce a person to the Bruderhof, though it does raise my curiosity level. ( )

Delightful coffee table book chronicling the lives of members the the Bruderhof communities worldwide. A 100 year old experiment in Christian communal living must be doing something right because they are still going. The full color photographs are wonderful to flip through. ( )

The title of this Book is "Another Life is Possible." Unfortunately, the book says almost nothing about how ‘another life’ is achieved. The commitment to pacifism and to giving up personal wealth is obviously a large part of this other life. But how is the communal lifestyle achieved?

There is no information on the governance structure, the dispute resolution process, how resources are shared, how decisions are made and who makes them. There are no details on what challenges have been faced (other than a few early challenges with Hitler and German nationals in England). There must have been other challenges over the past 100 years of the Bruderhof’s existence.

Instead of the repetitive stories, it would have been more interesting to cut these stories in number and give some deeper information. Some of the stories contained insights, such as this on page 27, “I have found that the more you give children materially, the less grateful they are.” There were also insights into the use of technology. However, the section "Children and Education," didn’t say much about the system of education used, although in other sections, I learned that outdoor activities play an important role. In general, the book is short of specifics, such as why the women wear basically the same uniform.

If the purpose of the book is a celebration of the people within the community, it does an ample job of this. However, who else would be interested? Perhaps other Christians who might want to look at how they live their lives. Other than that, the readership for this book is limited. ( )

I had absolutely no knowledge of the Bruderhof before reading this book. What a delightful surprise when I received it. It’s a gorgeous coffee table book with wonderful photographs, a history of the Bruderhof and portraits of current members. It’s an enjoyable and informative read and a really pretty book, too! ( )

I always suspect that communal-living, give-yourself-fully societies are cults. But the brief, written portraits and numerous photographs of a 100-year-old society with several communities around the world, collectively referred to as the Bruderhof, convey the realization of an ideology that gives me hope. Their foundation is Jesus's Sermon on the Mount which I understand as love of and respect for life - daily embodying this mindset in every interaction. Commitment to the community cannot be made until 21 years of age, members can leave without retribution and are welcomed back, continued adherence to pacifism, monetarily supported by designing and building innovative and solidly-crafted playground and disability equipment, technology-embracing (discerning between what beneficially contributes to the society and what undermines it), readily able to provide volunteers for humanitarian disasters and significant assistance to under-served populations, and welcoming to those in search of another way to live. How miraculous that humans can dedicate their lives to each other and succeed despite all of the obstacles being human creates. ( )
