Mickey Haller is charged with murdering a client. and he must find out who really committed the crime and why. Pretty Good 10/2021

After celebrating a win at a local bar, but stone sober, the Lincoln Lawyer Mickey Haller is pulled over by a cop for a missing rear license plate, who finds an ex-client con man shot to death and stuffed in the trunk of the car. Mickey is jailed, with bail set at $5 million by a vindictive judge, and he decides to defend himself from jail with visitations from his partner and investigator. His adversary (D.A. 'Death Row' Dana) and Mickey battle in pre-trial motions, with a judge, who seems to side with the defense more often than not. Eventually, Mickey's bail is reduced, and his half-brother Harry Bosch helps find a key witness to unravel a fairly contrived plot of revenge and a secret governmental investigation that could mean the death penalty as the decedent owed money to Mickey. Connelly does a good job wrapping in the scourge of COVID-19, which sends his partner to the Pacific Northwest as her father is sick, and I liked his ex-wife Maggie "McFierce" agreeing to become his co-counsel for the trial. 3.5 stars, rounded down. The Law of Innocence simply states that in order to prove your innocence (not just that you are not guilty) you must find the perpetrator of the crime you are accused of. That's the situation Michael Haller finds himself. Pulled over by the cops, they open his trunk and find a dead body. What follows is a dissection of our criminal justice system. Whether Connelly intended to or not, he succeeded in putting all the flaws of our adversarial system on display. Couple that with the impact of the pandemic and Haller must use all of his resources to find the person who set him up.

While I liked the book, the frequent digressions about his relationships with his ex-wives struck me as unnecessary, rambling, and not at all realistic. Bosch plays a smaller than minuscule part. ( )

The Law of Innocence is riveting from the beginning to the end. Michael Connelly has a knowledge and understanding of how prosecutors, defense lawyers, the FBI, judges and criminals think. The book takes place in present day. It is just the beginning of the pandemic. This present day setting just intensifies the reality of the book. Unfortunately one can only give a book up to five stars. Honestly, after reading many suspense novels including many of Michael Connelly's books, The Law of Innocence deserves more than five stars. It deserves a ten. ( )

Synopsis: 'After the body of a career con artist is found in the trunk of Haller’s Lincoln Towncar, he faces a first-degree murder rap. Opting to defend himself, Haller enlists his own legal defense team to assist. Half-brother Harry Bosch steps in to help investigate, and the unusual case leads to the port of Los Angeles and a biofuel company run by a recidivist criminal with mob ties whom Haller put away years earlier. Bosch suspects that the company is running a complex scam and double dipping on government subsidies payouts. Meanwhile, 2020 is off to a strange start with reports of a deadly virus in China that threatens to spread worldwide. The tension builds as Haller prepares for trial, and it becomes clear that he was framed by a much larger entity than he originally thought.'
Review: This was a very intriguing story in that knowing that Haller was innocent didn't mean that he was not going to end up in jail. The added suspense of when COVID would actually hit in the story also made the reader wonder if he'd get through the trial and out of jail in a timely manner. I didn't like the ending simply because the bad guy wasn't caught and the FBI did nothing to actually clear the case. ( )
