The entire plot revolves around them and there is not even a hint of explanation of what they do, what their origin is, why they are important. I would be OK with magic, I think, if they explained that this is a world where magic existed but they try to pretend that it doesn't yet have it as the central part of so much of the story. Irritating. I also really can't stand the weird baby-making obsession of the old world and the weird corrupt church. I don't understand why it exists in the story or how it happened with how specific Tear was about the crossing. I will grant that this is a page turner but it never paid off for me and it made the heroine a lot less likable than she was in the beginning. It felt like these things made it a book that should have been in another series, because the whole first book missed having any of these notes.
