This was simple and drama free. Izumi is picked up by Katsura, who thinks Izumi is an escort. Katsura is gay, Izumi is straight. Izumi is simple and childish, so he goes along with Katsura on this date. Not much of Katsura's character is revealed, he just thinks Izumi is cute. They have sex at the end of their date and Izumi is questioning his sexuallity, he watches straight porn but it has no effect on him but he claims to hate homosexuals. I didn't really like the relationship, Izumi hates what Kasura is but gives into him anyway. I liked Aoe, Katsura's friend, he was more realistic and forced Izumi to be less wishy-washy. ( )

I like the drawing style, even though it isn't the best I've ever seen. But that´s just my personal opinion as a manga novice. The story is quite sweet, if you overlook the rape scenes, which have been a regular in almost every yaoi I´ve so far read. And there are a lot of parts in which Love Mode is pretty funny, especially when Takamiya surprises Izumi with affection. But even though I overall liked reading Love Mode I decided against buying the other comics in this series. ( )

This review was originally written for the website ListerX.com, which is now defunct. It can also be found on my blog, The Graphic Librarian.

Cover
The cover for V.01 is sleek and simple as far as design goes, unfortunately the pictures chosen for the front and back covers aren't exactly Shimizu's best - not a great way to get readers interested in a new series. Regardless, the inside art is quite a bit better so hopefully the cover won't scare off too many people. In addition, the BLU logo features a bit too prominently on the front cover, but thankfully doesn't have the same invasive feel as Tokyopop's goofy red logo. Another thing I found annoying was the blurb on the back which sounds overly "sexed" and fails to truly describe what the story's about. The plot comes off sounding like a B-grade porno rather than the touching love story that it really is.

Artwork
I've heard it said that Shimizu has one of those art styles that you either really like or really hate. However, I'm actually fairly indifferent towards it. In other words, while the manga-ka's art is decent, it isn't the best I've ever seen. I think this waffling indifference of mine is due to the fact that I find Shimizu's style to be much more suited to drawing older men rather than younger ones. All of her art has a very angular feel to it that really works well with the older characters, but becomes awkward on the younger ones. Other than that I find the artwork extremely appealing. Shimizu has this habit of sometimes oversizing some of her body proportions (i.e. hands a bit too big; arms a bit too long, etc.) However, it's always done in such a way that the characters still look and feel natural. So, while I'd usually find something like this annoying, it actually enhances the illustrations in this case. I also like the way the characters' expressions have been done; there's a large variety of emotions throughout the story and the manga-ka does a good job of not going too over-the-top with them. Thus, the emotions feel much more real as opposed to melodramatic and/or silly. The sex scenes are illustrated in very much the same way. Every detail is taken seriously to heighten the eroticism of the moment. And yet, while these scenes are definitely graphic in nature, they exude an air of tastefulness that isn't always found in yaoi titles.

Plot
**Possible Spoilers Warning**

When a young high school student named Izumi is accidentally mistaken as an escort from a gay dating service, all he wants to do is forget it ever happened. Of course, his "date", Takamiya, feels terribly guilty for what's happened and desperately wants to make amends. However he admits that he also has ulterior motives - it seems he's fallen hard for Izumi and hopes that by hanging around, the younger man will eventually come to feel the same way. Understandably, Izumi is resistant to Takamiya's plans but it's not long before the older man becomes a faithful, understanding friend and Izumi begins to question his own feelings. Then, when Takamiya's friend, Aoe Reiji, (who just happens to own the aforementioned "dating" service) confronts Izumi, the young man is forced to admit that his feelings for Takamiya have indeed changed. After a small bout of indecision, he decides to explore his new emotions, and agrees to go to a party being hosted by Aoe. However, things don't go exactly according to plan. Izumi is once again mistaken as a host, and when he goes to Takamiya for comfort he find his sometimes-lover in the arms of another man. Could Izumi's romance be over before it's even begun or is there possibly another explanation for the older man's seeming indiscretion?

Content Warnings
Language = If something as minor as language bothers you then steer clear of this book - see other content warnings for more information.

Violence = Two separate rape scenes. Why does every yaoi title in existence have to have at least one rape scene?!

Nudity = Yes, it's scattered rather profusely throughout the volume.

Sexual Situations = Where there's nudity there's not always sex, but in this series one almost automatically equals the other.

Ratings
Cover - 6/10 - While not the best cover in existence, it's actually not that different from the original.

Artwork - 7.5/10 - This style, with it's seemingly extra-long proportions, probably isn't for everyone, but I actually find it pleasantly appealing.

Plot - 7/10 - Fairly basic & stereotypical, yet still sweet and funny. I'm looking forward to V.02 which focuses almost completely on Takamiya's friend Aoe.

Overall - 7/10 - While V.01 isn't especially stunning, this series won't disappoint in later volumes. Once the major characters are all in place things will really take off. ( )
