En annorlunda allians av Julia Quinn (Author)

faither: This is the first in a similar series about a large family looking for spouses in Regency England. Both series are quite entertaining.

I received this book for free from the publisher (Avon Books) in exchange for an honest review.

To preface, I just want to say that I have not watched the show yet so I cannot say how it compares to it nor did I have any particular expectations going in. I wanted to read the book first before watching the show.

I ended up really enjoying this book!

The book was a lot funnier than I expected it to be. The humor was woven throughout the novel nicely. The little excerpts from Lady Whistledown were a very entertaining touch that added to the hilarity.

As for the two leads, I did prefer the Simon over Daphne. Daphne did some things that I was not a fan of. She wasn’t completely terrible; she just wasn’t my favorite. As for the supporting characters, I loved them all, especially the other Bridgerton siblings. I can’t wait to learn more about them in the rest of the books.

This edition did include the bonus Second Epilogue (which was originally published separately online) which I also enjoyed. It’s relatively short so it didn’t reveal that much, but it was still fun revisiting the characters again.

Overall, I found this to be a delightful read. I am looking forward to finally watching the show and continuing the series. ( )

This is a familiar troupe. The Duke, Simon, is still fighting a battle with his dead father who despised him as a child because he struggled to speak. He thinks by refusing to get married and having kids he will win this battle since the late Duke wanted nothing more than the Bassett line to continue.

Everything is going his way until he meets Daphne. She will have to help him come to terms with the legacy of an abusive father before he can find closure to that part of his life and live the life of the new Duke of Hastings to the fullest.

Nothing really new in the plot. However, I did like the character of Daphne. For a woman of her age she knew her mind. I like the dialogue between her and her siblings and thought it worked nicely with the story.

In short, this is the typical sweet, somewhat sappy romance story. There was a touch of humor that had me laughing during a couple of scenes. If you like these types of stories, this is most definitely for you. ( )

I'd meant to read The Duke and I for a while; the Netflix series just gave me a push. Spoiler alert: If you want to read the series and haven't watched the series, don't watch the series. It has a HUGE spoiler for the other books. Also, I include a spoiler below since it is impossible to tell you what disturbed me without it.

This is a semi-typical Regency -- we know who is going to marry whom from the opening pages. I liked that the heroine was pretty competent, although appalling ignorant about human biology. The hero was different than most since he had a stutter. Also, his father was a nasty piece of work.

Some things happened in the book that I didn't much like. Those are below in the spoiler. The bottom line is that if you like Regencies, you'll probably like this one. The bad spot lowered the rating by a star to only four stars.

SPOILER:

You really should stop reading now if you don't want the spoiler.

There's a good amount of sex scenes in the book, which I didn't mind since the plot twist depends on sex. I didn't like the rape scene, nevermind it was a wife raping her husband. ( )

Quinn, Julia. The Duke and I. Bridgertons No. 1. Avon, 2000.
I am not a regular reader of bodice-ripping neo-Georgian romance novels, but I wanted to see what producer Shonda Rhimes had to work with in creating the Bridgertons series for Netflix. The answer is that she had a straightforward aristocratic romance in which the heroine helps her lover, who was abused as a child, overcome his daddy issues. Shonda Rhimes added several subplots and a whole lot of racial diversity that one could wish the English Aristocracy actually had in 1815. That is about what I expected, 3 stars to Quinn for not being as edgy as Rhimes, but that is probably unfair given the different audiences for the original and its adaptation. ( )
