Abby's friend Leo convinces her and their friend Connie to sign up for a DNA test. Leo is hoping to connect with his birth parents, but Abby and Connie just see it as a lark, until the results come back. Abby discovers that she has a full-blooded sister named Savannah that she didn't know anything about. Once they connect, Savvy convinces Abby to come to summer camp with her, but when they arrive, sparks fly when Abby learns that Savvy is head camp counselor and Leo, who she has had a crush on for a while now, is also there. Savvy and Leo are part of a camp clique that has been together for years, and Abby begins to wonder if getting to know her sister might have been a mistake.

You Have a Match is a very layered book that is derived from the many facets of Abby's life. Dealing with loss, communicating with family and friends, standing up for what is right, and settling conflicts are all issues that Abby faces in this story. These themes are well developed as are the personalities of the characters. The only negative aspect of the story is that the ending seems almost too perfect, but overall You Have a Match is a well written novel exploring many questions facing young adults as they approach adulthood. It’s a bit like The Parent Trap for the Instagram generation. Abby’s best friends are doing DNA ancestry tests so she does one too, assuming the most interesting thing she’ll discover is whether or not she is more Irish than Connie. She doesn’t expect to discover that she has an older full-sister, Savannah. Savvy is going to spend her summer at camp, so Abby signs up too.

This has a compelling mystery: why was Savannah given up for adoption and why was she kept a secret from her younger siblings? There are also pranks, accidents and other complications, as Abby and Savvy get to know each other and try to find answers.

I would have liked to see Abby’s camp experiences get a little more time on-page, but admittedly there’s just too much else going on -- she’s grieving for her grandfather, struggling with parental pressure over her slipping grades, trying to hide her crush on her best friend Leo, making new friends, and making time for her photography. And then there’s Savvy’s popular wellness Instagram, the pressures she faces from her parents, her romantic problems...

An entertaining and optimistic novel that keeps all the balls it’s juggling in the air. (The ending is maybe slightly more optimistic than it is realistic, and I’d maybe have liked it more if it had cut out some elements in order to give more space to others… but hey, quibbles.)

“They’re going to murder me.”
“They’re going to murder
us,” Savvy corrects me.
“How the hell did they figure it out?” I ask, way too loudly for someone who should be trying to go incognito. Did you put something on Instagram?”
Savvy lets out a snort that borders on hysterical [...] “You think I’d put this shit-show on
Instagram?”
I’d be mad at her for insinuating that my existence constitutes a “shit show,” but honestly, I’m getting a kick out of this. Bed-headed, no-fucks-given, slippers-clad Savvy is ten times more dramatic than Instagram Savvy, and she's a heck of a lot more fun to watch.
Except Savvy also looks one light breeze away from losing her marbles, so someone has to take control.
“Okay. Don’t worry. It’s going to be okay. We’ll head them off and explain… as reasonably as possible… that we have gone behind their backs, dug through the last twenty-years’ worth of their darkest secrets and run away to an island to hide.”

High school junior Abby Day agrees to take a DNA test with her friend Leo, who's adopted from the Philippines along with his sister and raised by white parents. He doesn't find any relatives - but Abby finds a full sister just a year and a half older. Savannah - Savvy - contacts her, and the two meet in person, then begin trying to solve the mystery of what happened. They attend the same summer camp - where Leo is also, which complicates things, because Abby has had a crush on Leo for months, but their mutual best friend Connie told Abby that Leo didn't like her back, so Abby's trying to quash the feeling. For conflict-avoidant Abby, who's still grieving the death of her grandfather Poppy, it's a lot at once; Abby is physically courageous, but now she needs to courage to have honest conversations with her best friends, new sister, and her - their - parents.

Quotes

I hate it that it takes one of us being upset for things to feel okay between us. (ch. 1, Abby and Leo)

It's like he's a barometer for human emotion, and anytime someone is out of whack he feels obligated to tip the scale back in their favor. (ch. 1)

But there are some things in life you don't have a choice about. (ch. 4)

I can outrun him, maybe, but I can't outrun whatever just happened back there. At this point I don't even know if I can keep up with myself. (ch. 7)

"I'm always on your side. But part of being on your side is telling you the truth." (Leo to Abby, ch. 14)

Maybe I should..solve one problem with another... (ch. 18)

Being with Savvy...there's this closeness...and there's this friendship that we've started to build between us. But it's missing the in-between. (ch. 20)

I just want to understand. I don't want all the pain that comes with it. (ch. 22)

"I don't know if I was really thinking about what might happen if I did [find family]. What it might dig up." (Leo to Abby, ch. 26)

"Things are always going to move for different people at different times. You've gotta be patient. Set your own pace." (Leo to Abby, ch. 26)

We're both trying to catch up with people who seem like they're already gone. (Abby & Finn, ch. 27)

I think in life you can know you're loved without peering too closely at the edges of it. It's almost scary, seeing that there aren't any - it doesn't have a beginning or an end. It just kind of is. (ch. 33)

Kissing Leo is so easy that I almost miss the moment it happens, the way you don't remember opening the front door when you come home... (ch. 36) ( )

Abby, Leo and Connie have been best friends for ever but Abby has gone and done something embarrassing that looks like it will upset her and Leo's relationship for ever. ( Yes, she developed a crush on him and tried to kiss him!) So when Leo asks the two girls to do a DNA test with him ( He's adopted and hoping to find a match overseas from his birth family) Abby sees it as a way to mend their friendship. What she doesn't count on is the test revealing that she has a full blood sister living not that far from her! In secret, the siblings contact each other and the older one Savannah convinces Abby to sign up for a Summer camp she is going on, so the two can bond and find out more about each other. What Abby didn't know is that Leo is going to be on the same camp.

A mystery to sort, a new sister to get to know, new friends to meet, Leo to try and work out AND a new boy called Finn all mean that Abby is in for one very hectic Summer. And all this and getting over the recent death of her Grandfather, Connie possibly lying to her and her failing Grades. It will be anything but boring!

Very easy to read novel which kept me guessing and kept going even after the sisters discover the secret behind their parents' feud. Its a real pity that the author had to sprinkle the "F' word on every other page starting on Page 2...otherwise I could have promoted this to younger readers than years 9-10. ( )

I loved Tweet Cute, this author's debut so I was really excited to read her sophomore novel, You Have a Match. Abby, along with her two best friends, Leo and Connie, do one of those DNA test things. Leo is adopted and hoping to learn more about his birth family. When the results come back, Abby was not expecting to find out she has a full blooded sister in the next town over.

In order to get to know her sister, Abby ends up at the same summer camp where her sister, Savannah is a counselor. The two had some contact on line but then concocted this scheme to be at camp together since they couldn't get their parents to talk about the situation.

This is where the book fell flat for me. I was more interested in the b plot with Abby's parents and Savannah's parents. I know this is a YA novel, I know it's a YA subject, I totally get it. I just think I really was more I was drawn to their story than the one the author chose to write about.

I still think it was a cute book and I will continue to read all the author's work. She's a great writer and deserves all the hype.

**Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy** ( )
