If you have read John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath or know the history of the Dust Bowl in the 1930s, you know the setting of this author's new historical novel. Years of land mismanagement exacerbated by a severe drought condition resulted in devastating dust storms in the Southern Plains region of the United States. Resulting poverty with little government aid caused a migration of many to the west coast hoping for a better life.

Abandoned by her family when 25-year-old Elsa Wolcott become pregnant by college-bound Rafe Martinelli, she moves in with his parents as his education and career dreams come to an end. Loreda is born several months later and Ant several years afterwards. Elsa learns to love Rafe's parents and farmlife. However, Rafe continues to mourn the life he could have had. Later when drought conditions and the dust storms make living extremely arduous, Rafe abandons the family to a life of a hobo. When Ant almost dies from a respiratory disease on Black Sunday, the name given to April 14, 1935 when the worst dust storm in history chasing birds and animals in its path, Elsa and her children travel to California hoping for a "milk and honey" better life. However, like Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath, she encounters a life not much better than what she left.

Initially, I was concerned that his novel was no more than a contemporary retelling of John Steinbeck's work but Kristin Hannah's writing drew me into the story motivating me to keep turning the pages to see if life gets better for the family. Although their life doesn't get much better, the novel did have more of a satifying ending than The Grapes of Wrath. As I was reading this novel, I kept making connections between the prejudice against the Dust Bowl refugees and the contemporary immigration crisis. Overall, a good story and a thought-provoking read. ( )

Truly a haunting novel, reminiscent of The Grapes of Wrath. As usual, beautifully written so that the characters, as well as the historical aspects and descriptions of the Dust Bowl and migrant conditions are very believable. My only thought was that when we think how the Mexican migrants were forced out and the American migrants took over the harvesting ---what did that mean about what we did and still do, today, to the Mexican workers? When have we treated them as more than slaves, underpaid and forced to live in poverty. ( )

The Four Winds tells the story of a family broken apart and healed by the Dust Bowl. A childhood illness left Elsa Wolcott sickly and weak, at least in her family’s eyes. She was destined to stay single, living with her parents, becoming their caretaker someday. However, that changed when she met and fell in love with Rafe Martinelli and became pregnant. A quick marriage gave her a new family since her old one wanted nothing to do with her. In time, she finds happiness with her children, her in-laws, and her somewhat distant husband. In that order.

The Dust Bowl winds blew apart her marriage and her future. Rafe left in the night. Her son could not survive the damage to his lungs from the wind. They were near-starvation on the farm. Finally, she moves with her children to California, the land of promise and plenty, leaving behind her beloved in-laws. There she meets exploitive farmers and becomes involved in the farmworker struggle for fairer working conditions and pay and finds herself as well as love.

I was a bit disappointed in The Four Winds perhaps because I thought Hannah does so well with creating both a sense of place and character in “The Great Alone.” That book may have set my expectations too high leading to disappointment. Perhaps I am also unfair because I think “The Grapes of Wrath” is one of the best books ever written and The Four Winds feels like it takes Tom Joad, Ma Joad, and Jim Casy and combines them in Elsa Wolcott.

I think many people will love it. I thought this book was great up until the end. Sometimes an ending can be perfect for some people and make other people mad. This made me mad. And again, Hannah added a chapter to wrap things up after the dust cleared. I don’t want to dissuade anyone from reading what will be a great book to many people, so I am making as clear as possible that what disappointed me was not her ability to write a compelling story but because it was too full of Grapes for me.

I received an e-galley of The Four Winds from the publisher through NetGalley.

What a powerful book about a terrible time in American History. One that I only knew a little about. I had no idea exactly what a dust storm was, or the deepest despair that the proud farmers felt. I had no idea how poorly the farmers who migrated to other parts of the country were treated. The depression and drought didn't effect much of the country as much as it did those in the mid west. They were shunned and work for mere pennies, still unable to support themselves and their families. Many people didn't survive, but those who did had a very strong will. Amazing book. ( )

The author's depiction of life in the Dust Bowl and the discrimination against those who migrated to California in the hopes of work and a better life are impactful but the story is unrelentingly depressing. The writing style is not terrible but employs no nuance or creativity. The main character survives disaster after disaster after disaster but fails to recognize her own value and worth. ( )
