Twenty-two stories, selected by editor Donna Scott from disparate places, that represent some of the best science fiction published anywhere in 2019: stories of heroism, stories of loss, stories of wonder. In this volume you will encounter tales in which creatures are cut off from their loved ones; someone is trapped with an abuser; a bird sings; weeds grow where we hope for a garden; we consider what our alternative selves might be doing; we can't sleep; we wish we could keep things just the way they were; we drink too much... and we look to rockets blasting off into the sky and think that there lies the future; that's hope. I received this ebook through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program and read it in fits and starts through the pandemic. At this point, the only selection that I remember vividly is "Anxiety Gene" which I found to be a fascinating take on quantum theory. A generally enjoyable read, ranging from the odd to the fascinating. ( )

Received this book through Early Reviewers. I don’t normally read SF - I found some of the stories interesting but I probably wouldn’t bother reading it again or investigating any of the authors further. ( )

I really enjoyed this best of British sci-fi. I wasn’t sure if there was going to be a British angle or if the words would be different – – seeing that I am from the states and live in Minnesota. But in a number of the stories you could understand I think the story better if you are a student of the British English language. I actually enjoyed a number of these stories because of that perspective. I think they’re more careful with the choice of words– – And therefore a little less action and a little more intellectual and analytical approach. As with any best of some of the stories are better than others but overall I’d highly recommend it. I find short stories to be very satisfying and I’m always interested to know if the author is working on a novel or if the short story is really all there is to the storyteller in the author for that story.I hope the number of the stories turn into novels. One of the other reviewer’s did a great job and outlining each of the stories in detail so I won’t go into that. But I can I highly recommend this best of anthology. Glad I got it through early reviewer’s. Paul Floyd Minneapolis Minnesota ( )

I enjoyed this much more than the equivalent Fantasy collection. The stories were a lot of fun and covered a wide range of topics, from the serious to the small. I really enjoyed "The Land Of Grunts And Squeaks" and "From The Wicked, Only Weeds Will Grow" ( )

This collection of 23 stories published in 2019 would be a wonderful gift for any of your friends interested in Science Fiction. It serves as a sampler of what authors are writing about now and what issues are being raised and discussed in the socio-political laboratory that is Science Fiction. As the Editor, Donna Scott, points out in her introduction, this collection was prophetic in its content. Many of the stories published in 2019 are about issues, such as protecting ourselves from natural threats outside our homes, the control of our world by AIs, the creation and reinforcement of a two-tier society by extreme provision of luxury for the few, and control of water being used as weapon of war, that we see realized today.

With 23 stories covering such a range of topics and live issues this collection provides plenty of food for thought and enjoyment.
