If you want a rich version of women learns lesson from history that puts her life on a better track read Household Gods. This is a tin version, a fun read as long as you don't require any reality, which somehow is shabby in a book which is at least partly about facing reality. Poisoning off the bastards is great fun though. - In 1791 the Duke of Clarence was one of the Royals and unmarried, and the use of Lord Clarence shows no real interest in historical accuracy. Not that the real Clarence didn't deserve poisoning, but many did who weren't. ( )

I was approved to read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book, but couldn't bring myself to actually pick it up and read it. I was so captivated by the beautiful cover art, but clearly didn't read the book blurb carefully enough.

Now, this is just my opinion, and I'm sure many will disagree with me - I'm not here to argue about it, so please do not engage me in that way, if you would be so kind. I'm just to give my outlook in case it helps others. The reason I didn't pick it up to read was because of the clear anti-man sentiment outlined in the synopsis. Now, presumably, the female characters have valid reasons to be rid of the men in their life, but it just turned my stomach, to be honest.

I often find that by changing a couple of key points in a narrative, it can give a different perspective on whether something is appropriate. For example, what if this novel was about men killing women? Or people of one race killing another? Neither of those would be found acceptable in the modern world, so in my view at least, women targeting men is no less acceptable. Again, this is just my view in case it helps others. I am not here to get into an argument on it - any comments to that effect will be ignored.

I do appreciate historical fiction, and beautiful cover art, so I look forward to other offerings from this author and publisher.

London, 1791: Nella owns an apothecary shop but in addition to healing, she also helps women by providing them with poison to kill the men in their lives that did them wrong. Then a servant girl, Eliza, shows up in her shop looking for a way to kill her mistress's husband. In the present day, Caroline was supposed to be here on her anniversary, but she's just learned of her husband's infidelity and leaves without him. She always wanted to be an historian, a dream she gave up for more practical pursuits, so when she finds a vial while mudlarking she decides to hunt down its origin.

Three perspectives - Nella, Eliza, and Caroline - and two time periods make for a compelling read, and it was fun to see how Caroline's discoveries matched up with the events in 1791. I loved the research scenes at the British Library, and if Caroline has a few coincidental discoveries and jumps in logic, I could mostly forgive it. Eliza's narration was particularly well done. My only real quibble was how closely certain events in the two time periods mirrored each other in a way that beggared belief. Still, a solid first novel and I'd read more by Penner. ( )

I just finished this wonderful dual-timeline historical suspense novel. This is a wonderful debut for new author Sarah Penner! The story idea was quite unique, the writing was very accomplished, and the characters were all very real and memorable. Set in London in both the current day and in the late 1700s, The Lost Apothecary unearths the mystery of a group of murders all dispensed by poison! 5 stars..unputdownable! ( )
