Fiction. Literature. Romance. Humor (Fiction.) HTML:Three women uniteâ??and fight backâ??after their husbands do them wrong, in this tale of "wickedly funny female bonding" by a New York Timesâ??bestselling author (People).

Angela, half-Jewish, half-Italian, and all New Yorker, is a lawyer married to Reid, a handsome old-money WASP. Michelle adores her childhood sweetheart husband, Frank, and the dream house he's provided for her and their two beautiful children. Jada is an African American working mom trying to maintain a happy home, despite her husband Clinton's failing business.

But then, like a bad soufflé, the lives of these three thirtysomething women collapse as they each discover the truth about their dirty, rotten mates. Uniting for solace and support, they draw on one another's friendship to heal their wounds. Bowed but not beaten, this smart, audacious trio will concoct a brilliant recipe to take back what's theirs and serve justice on their duplicitous menâ??and transform them from victims to victors . . .

This is a "riotous" tale from the bestselling author of such beloved novels as The First Wives Club and Fashionably Late (USA Today).

This is far from Goldsmith's best work, and it's largely a retread of The First Wives Club, but the revenge fantasies are still fun and diverting enough. ( )

Well the first thing I have to say is that these women were put through the wringer. Especially Jada. It got to the point that I couldn’t listen to a lot of this at one time because I got so bummed out. Not really angry so much as upset at their abuse. There are a few good men sprinkled throughout this book, but not many. The main idea is that no man, whatever his appearance of good, is trustworthy. Not completely true, but I still felt myself getting down listening to this.

On their first wedding anniversary, Angela’s husband informs her over dinner that he’s had an affair. She walks out and is upset but that’s only the beginning. After ignoring a week of his calls and flowers and other attempts at communication and reconciliation, Angela calls Reed at home. A strange woman answers. While trying to make peace with Angela and tell her how much he loves her/needs her/wants her, the slimy bastard moves another woman into their house. Not just any woman though. Angela’s best friend Lisa. It’s unreal to me that any woman who cheats with a married man can expect him to be faithful to her afterwards. I mean honestly, once a cheater, always a cheater.

And Michelle is a very well insulated housewife. Brought up poor, she now has a new Lexus and a perfectly decorated house and more disposable income than you can shake a stick at. She and Frank also have a very hot sex life. That’s not how he strays. No, Frank is a drug lord in addition to taking kickbacks and bribing government officials. He lies to her and she finds out that he really is guilty. She finds a ton of money in a secret hole in her daughter’s closet. She gives the money to Jada to put in a safe deposit box in her (Jada’s) name. When Frank finds out she found the money he beats her to try to get her to give it back. Instead, she tapes him threatening to implicate her in his crimes and he goes to jail.

Jada gets the most royal screwing of all. She has been working as a bank manager for a few years in order to support her kids and her lazy assed husband who hasn’t worked in 5 years. He does absolutely nothing around the house (include maintenance and he was a building contractor). He is also having an affair with some woman at their church. He decides he wants out and takes the kids. He lies to everyone and frames her as a terrible mother who didn’t clothe, bathe or feed her kids because she is always working. Says she put in so many hours that they never saw her. He gets his mother to lie, too and they take the kids away. Clinton also sues for alimony, child support and the house in addition to full custody. They rule in his favor and she loses everything. To make matters worse, she gets fired from work because she spends too much time with her kids. Talk about the worst irony imaginable.

So I have to suffer though 2/3 of the book in this way. Watching things go from bad to worse and waiting for the revenge part. But the payoff is weak. We don’t get to see the men suffer at all. We see the 3 women execute their plans but the real reason I wanted to see the revenge is missing. They set up Reed to be caught in the act with both Michelle and Jada. Not only caught with them but with his dick super glued to his hand and the mattress. Lisa is horrified.

Michelle’s revenge is to turn Frank in to the police and turn state’s evidence. Jada’s is to kidnap her kids back and escape to the Cayman islands. This last plan is funded by Michelle’s stolen money. She says she won’t have anything to do with it but puts it to good use.

For women who have been so brutally used by men, they sure are hot to get another one. Jada is kind of making eyes at this barrister guy who helps her. And Angela, pregnant with Reed’s baby, starts dating a lawyer in her new office. It’s weird. I think that real women would stay so far away from men they’d forget what one looked like. ( )
