Andrew Hook sees the world through a different lens. He takes often mundane things and coaxes the reader to find strangeness, beauty, and horror in their form; he colours the world in surreal shades and leads the reader down discomforting paths where nothing is quite as it should be. Frequencies of Existence features twenty-four of the author's finest stories, including four that are original to this collection. "Andrew Hook is an undisputed superstar of strange fiction" - Neil Williamson, author of The Moon King "A rich slab of Andrew Hook's trademark understated darkness: measured, careful, but ruthless in its own quiet way." - Chris Beckett, Arthur C. Clarke and Edge Hill Prize-winning author. "His stories range from the darkly apocalyptic to the hopefully visionary, some brilliant and none less than satisfactory." - The Harrow "Refreshingly original, uncompromisingly provocative, and daringly intelligent" - The Future Fire Contents: Your Golden Hands The Universe At Gun Point Kodokushi A Knot of Toads The Abduction of Europe The Aniseed Gumball Kid Eskimo The Last Mohican Bullet A Life In Plastic Burning Daylight Making Friends With Fold-Out Flaps The Frequency of Existence The Stench of Winter A Pageant of Clouds Always Forever Today The Caged Sea Interference Softwood My Naked Man Tokyo In Rain The Day My Heart Stood Still Drowning In Air White Matter About the Author… (mer)

I received this book awhile ago through the early reviewer program. I have read it off and on, but I haven’t been able to finish it. The stories haven’t really engaged my interest. They also have a male point of few to them that I haven’t experienced before with other male authors. I may go back and read a few more stories in the future. ( )

An interesting single-author anthology. I found myself dipping into this one and, to an extent, savouring the stories, rather than devouring it at one gulp as is my wont. I was reminded a bit by the Japanese-set stories of the late Angela Carter, who resided in Japan in the late 1960s; specifically of her story collection Fireworks: Nine Profane Pieces. Other stories were set firmly in the UK, including one set in my home-town. Recommended.

This book is a collection of short stories. Each seems to shadow someone living their day-to-day life. The characters don't do anything spectacular. They go about their lives. Very much like each of us. Most of the things they think and do are mundane and uneventful. A few are creepy. One in particular has some characteristics that'll make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

The book is what it claims to be "Frequencies of Existence." I can empathize with most of the characters. Life can be dull and uneventful. Everyone has quirky behaviors if you look deep enough. As I got further into the book I found it more and more difficult to read another story. The book is not the problem. I guess I was expecting something spectacular and that didn't happen.

This is a book for those that want an calming read after a very stressful few weeks or months and not for someone expecting to see a super hero come crashing on the scene.

I'd like to say that I finished the book. I didn't. I got a little over half-way through. I'll pick it up again after the pandemic and some activity. Cabin fever and an uneventful book aren't a good mix for me. ( )

What is a poem?, Sylvia Plath asked, and answered: A bit of dust.
And what is a memory?, Andrew Hook asks in the last short story of this book and answers: Just a ghost of ourself.

All the 24 short stories contained in the volume more or less describe the same playful overlapping of one's own memory over the reality others might perceive. Short stories, mind you, that act out in very different environments.

The open-ended pieces shoot out like arrows to become flowers somewhere - leaving it up to you to picture the flowers yourself.

For me, it was becoming food for my brain.
Four stars for pronounced writing skills and exceptional out of the box thinking! ( )
