Fiction. Literature. Historical Fiction. HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ? Martha Hall Kelly??s million-copy bestseller Lilac Girls introduced readers to Caroline Ferriday. Now, in Sunflower Sisters, Kelly tells the story of Ferriday??s ancestor Georgeanna Woolsey, a Union nurse during the Civil War whose calling leads her to cross paths with Jemma, a young enslaved girl who is sold off and conscripted into the army, and Anne-May Wilson, a Southern plantation mistress whose husband enlists.
??An exquisite tapestry of women determined to defy the molds the world has for them.???Lisa Wingate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours
Georgeanna ??Georgey? Woolsey isn??t meant for the world of lavish parties and the demure attitudes of women of her stature. So when war ignites the nation, Georgey follows her passion for nursing during a time when doctors considered women on the battlefront a bother. In proving them wrong, she and her sister Eliza venture from New York to Washington, D.C., to Gettysburg and witness the unparalleled horrors of slavery as they become involved in the war effort.
In the South, Jemma is enslaved on the Peeler Plantation in Maryland, where she lives with her mother and father. Her sister, Patience, is enslaved on the plantation next door, and both live in fear of LeBaron, an abusive overseer who tracks their every move. When Jemma is sold by the cruel plantation mistress Anne-May at the same time the Union army comes through, she sees a chance to finally escape??but only by abandoning the family she loves.
Anne-May is left behind to run Peeler Plantation when her husband joins the Union army and her cherished brother enlists with the Confederates. In charge of the household, she uses the opportunity to follow her own ambitions and is drawn into a secret Southern network of spies, finally exposing herself to the fate she deserves.
Inspired by true accounts, Sunflower Sisters provides a vivid, detailed look at the Civil War experience, from the barbaric and inhumane plantations, to a war-torn New York City, to the horrors of the battlefield. It??s a sweeping story of women caught in a country on the brink of collapse, in a society grappling with nationalism and unthinkable racial cruelty,

"Sunflower Sisters" by Martha Hall Kelly is the first book that I have read in the Lilac Girls series. As other reviewers have posted, it's not necessary to read the series in order. I did not feel that I missed out on any vital information by not reading the previous novels in the series. The plot follows the lives of two of the Woolsey sisters, Georgy and Eliza, as they find themselves in the middle of the civil war. Even though they are from a wealthy family, they long to make a difference and assist in the war effort in any way they can. Georgy (Georgeanna) follows her passion for nursing. The sisters find themselves traveling from New York to Washington D.C. to Gettysburg. What made this novel enjoyable, was the fact that it also intermingles the lives of Jemma (a runaway slave), her family, other slaves, and her "owner". The story is well-written and an enjoyable read. There were a few times throughout the novel that it lagged a bit. Hence, the four-star versus five-star rating. If you enjoy historical fiction, this is a novel that I would recommend. ( )

I am pleased to read and review this latest book in this historical fiction generational series. In book 1, The Lilac Girls, we meet Caroline Ferriday during WWII.
In book 2, Eliza Woolsey Mitchell is the next courageous woman in this family, the mother of Caroline during WWI.
In this book 3, we are introduced to Caroline’s grandmother, Georgeanna Woolsey during the Civil War.

I received the digital copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. My review is voluntary and unbiased.

Like the two preceding novels, this focuses primarily on three major characters in alternating chapters during the same time era. Each of these books are stand alone reads. I found it interesting to read about this family in reverse order. This third book introduces us to the grandmother who influenced the generations that followed her.

The author provides additional resources for those interested in learning more about this remarkable family. Georgy and Eliza wrote a book about their experiences working as nurses during the Civil War. The sunflower was viewed as a sign of danger on the Underground Railroad for those seeking freedom from slavery. The extensive research compiled for this book is truly a labor of love which is evident to the reader.

The author provides another compelling story so close to being nonfiction that it touches the heart and soul. It reminds us that true heroes aren’t always on the battlefield. The fight for freedom and justice is never a lost cause for its people like the Woolseys who give us inspiration and determination to accomplish what seems unlikely.

The third book in the trilogy by Martha Hall Kelly, this book is hugely informative for those seeking to understand the history and atrocities of slavery and slave ownership, and the cruelties inflicted on these poor people, during the period of the American Civil War, and the movement of the abolitionists who fought so hard to change history. The story is told from the perspective of Gemma the slave, Anne-May a slaveholder and Georgeanna Woolsey, one of six sisters and one brother of a family dedicated to the abolition of slavery. Georgeanna nursed war casualties at a time when nursing by women was barely acceptable, but she persevered and strove to encourage and train women in the field of nursing. The early chapters are indeed confronting, but once into the story, it is a hard book to put down. An excellent read. ( )

Sunflower Sisters, for it cheery title, brings the reader to the United States during the Civil War. The story builds on this history of the Woolsey sisters and adds the story of Jemma, a girl born in slavery in the south and Anna-May, Jemma's owner. From these three perspectives, the book studies the history and atrocities of slavery and the Civil War. It depicts the individual personal stories of these women, and through them, brings to life a tine and place in history.

As with all good novels, they must end and a series must at some point conclude- this is one of the best and I am sad that it is over with but these novels are so good! The midst of the Civil War is brewing, the men are enlisting, the women are doing all they can to gather supplies to support the war and the plantation owners are tightening down on their slaves – they don’t want them to get any ideas of what the outcome of this war could bring.

This novel follows three point of views through this storyline and it really helps to drive home the point of each side of thins during this time. Jemma is a slave on a Maryland plantation but she is a house slave and has learned her letters, to read and write but since the new mistress has taken over life has gotten worse for them all. Things are ran very differently than when Aunt Tandy Rose ran the plantation and Jemma gets herself caught up in the new mistress side doings that put her in even more danger.

Anne-May is the new mistress of Peeler Plantation and she is going to show them how the place should be ran and how slaves really ought to be treated. They work for them after all and are provided food, shelter, and clothing- what more should they dare ask for? Anne-May comes from the deep south and brings many of her ways with her, and her new husband is not quite as in line with her thinking about how to run the plantation but it’s hers after all and she’ll do as she pleases.

Georgy is a busy body and always looking for ways to learn and do more for herself and others. When the announcement of war broke out, so did the call for women to become nurses and she was able to prove her worth and knowledge to go through training. This would put her well on her way to eventually taking her dream to a reality and opening a women’s nursing school. But the war must take priority and would give her the most first hand experiences.

I couldn’t wait to read this novel, but I also didn’t want it to end. I just love following these women’s storylines and lives with each generation. I thoroughly enjoy the vivid detail that Martha Hall Kelly writes in these stories and you really feel you are there with the characters. Thank you to Suzy Approved Book Tours for the invite and to the author and Ballantine Books for the free book. My collection is now complete! ( )
