My wife made me watch this. She is addicted to the Secret series of books--one of the most harmful sets of books ever written. Enough to almost make me believe in book burning! I won't burn the movie however. Luckily, it soft pedals the law of attraction and just portrays it in the positive outlook of the character played by Josh Lucas, who survived a near death experience and is now the nicest man you'll ever meet. Which is good, because Katie Holmes and her kids need to meet someone like him. The film succeeds where the books do not, because the characters are likable. Holmes is quite good as the widowed mother and the two kids are not annoying either. The mother-in-law starts out as a bit annoying, but this is the kind of film where everyone turns out great in the end, so it is relaxing to watch. The setting on the Mississippi Gulf Coast is also well done. So, if your wife (or spouse) insists you sit through this, fear not. It is a bit unrealistic, and it is certainly manipulative in how it tells the story to maintain the suspense, but it won't automatically convert you to the horrible sect of true believers. I should also mention that, unlike the Secret Movie, Rhonda Byrne doesn't appear and you don't have to listen to her unbearable voice. ( )
