The Windsor Knot is the first in SJ Bennett's series of mysteries featuring Queen Elizabeth II as the detective, although she is careful to give the credit to others. It was a fun, behind-the-scenes look at life as a monarch, and her sidekick(s) were all women who, as they moved on, served as mentors for the next generation of personal assistants. Philip is present as a supportive, thoughtful spouse, the corgis are always under foot, but the rest of the family is only referenced in passing. I have the next two books in the series waiting for me. Again, perhaps sooner rather than later, while I still remember the characters and could actually be caught up with the series. This is the first book in Her Majesty the Queen Investigates series. Queen Elizabeth is 91 and as sharp as ever. The morning after she had dinner with a small number of guests she is horrified to learn one of them, a young professional muscian she had danced with, died during the night and may have been murdered. Once the law enforcement investigation begins, she becomes more and more bothered with the track the investigators are taking. The interplay between the Queen and the investigators is so much fun! When she asks a question their response is always of the don't bother your pretty little head with such things type. And she doesn't, she just quietly begins her own investigation by sending out her assistant, a young woman with a military background, to do the legwork. All of the characters are well done. I like how Bennett portrayed the Queen and her relationship with Prince Phillip as well as her relationship with her employees. The opening gives us insight into her private thoughts about being at her beloved Windsor and her reluctance to return to Buckingham Palace making her a far more realistic character than we usually see. I didn't think the mystery was particulary interesting but I didn't care, it's the characters and the interplay among them that I liked. I have the second in the series on my Kindle and look forward to seeing what the Queen has to get involved in the next time. A talented young pianist has a night of music, dancing, and looovvvve at Windsor Castle, but the next day finds him strung up in a closet in a very embarrassing condition. Also he’s dead. Imagine explaining to Queen Elizabeth that the cause of death appears to be autoerotic asphyxiation. It’s not, of course. It’s murder, or else this would be a very different kind of book. SJ Bennett starts out weak; the point of view changes with every paragraph in the first few very short chapters, which is disruptive to the reading experience. Once she’s introduced most of the characters, though, the author’s footing is firm as she moves forward with the story. It’s odd to read a book in which so many of the main characters are fictionalized versions of real living people, but if the reader can set that weirdness aside, this is actually quite a good story. I couldn’t even pretend to follow the machinations that led to this murder as well as two others, but the main characters are nicely developed and the story flows well. Parts of this very readable cozy mystery would rate five stars, but the awkward beginning and the fact that the author didn’t have to build a setting or a main character from scratch warrant a one-star reduction to four stars. The second book, All the Queen’s Men is due out this month (March 2022); its UK title is A Three Dog Problem. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

Loved this story about how the Queen is secretly a master detective solving crimes while nobody is the wiser except for her trusted secretary (always a woman)
This probably isn’t a book for everyone but if you know / care a bit about the royal family you’ll probably find it fun.
I’m totally down for this to be a series. ( )
