( ) Barnacle, Garlic, and Melancholy Weirdie are triplets who wake up one day in their enormous family mansion to find everyone gone - all the servants, all the house guests, and both their parents. Eventually, they are taken to an orphanage - Our Lady of Perpetual Side-Eye (love it!) - where their different-ness turns off prospective adoptive parents. Luckily, their caseworker, Miss Emily, sees something special in them and adopts them herself. This is a funny, sweet, totally odd, and endearing tale of what it means to be different and what, actually, is "weird" anyway. I laughed out loud in parts during the short listen (it's only about 90 minutes long), and reveled in Kate Winslet's absolutely wonderful narration. Definitely one I'll listen to again, and if the ending is any indication, I may get to learn more about The Weirdies in another volume. 4.5 stars ❧ audiobook review When the main location in the book is Our Lady of the Perpetual Side-eye, you know the book is going to be good. AND WHAT A GREAT READ À LA A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS. A bit like [b:The Gashlycrumb Tinies|47558|The Gashlycrumb Tinies (The Vinegar Works, #1)|Edward Gorey|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327933644l/47558._SX50_.jpg|3211551] and Addams Family, too. Kate Winslet's narration just made it *chef's kiss* Barnacle, Garlic and Melancholy are just delightful. And Ms Emily is the best! The descriptions and one-liners had me giggling and shaking my head the whole time. Some of them were incredibly profound, too. Being very strange kept people away. And if people stayed away, you could never disappoint them. This is dark, funny, a bit gothic, wicked and just wonderful. 'I want you to be weird! As gloriously, outrageously weird as you can be! I like it - no, I love it!' Okay. This is delightful. Completely and utterly enchanting, and it is perfectly and brilliantly narrated by Kate Winslet. As an Audible member, I was able to listen to this for free as it is part of the Audible Plus Catalog. It's funny and dark in all the right ways. Written for both children and adults and reminiscent of Roald Dahl - like if Roald Dahl had written [The Series of Unfortunate Events] meets the Addams Family. And there are going to be more!! Very happy making. If you're thinking the author name is familiar, Buckley also wrote [The Sisters Grimm] books, which all of us here at the Pecan Paradisio loved. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
This is a very, very sad story. The characters suffer terrible tragedies. People die in unspeakable ways. Only a truly horrible person would be amused by their misfortune. Nevertheless, it is kind of funny. My advice is that you listen to this all by yourself. People can be judgy. If you're a fan of A Series of Unfortunate Events, Edward Scissorhands, or the darkest bits of Roald Dahl, the Weirdie triplets - Barnacle, Garlic, and Melancholy - will feel like old friends. After being left behind when the entire estate of Deadeye Manor is packed up for a doomed vacation cruise, the triplets have to learn how to fend for themselves. (When a staff of 200 servants has taken care of your every need, even brushing your own teeth is a mountainous task.) From their time at the Our Lady of the Perpetual Side-Eye Orphanage to their adoptive home on picture-perfect Sunshine Circle, the Weirdies have a lot to learn about the world...but, at least, they have each other.
