Riley Sager has set a high bar for suspense novels in this book. Charlie is a female college student whose best friend, Maddy, has been murdered by an unknown serial killer. Charlie has guilt and grief after this horrific crime, and eventually leaves the campus bound for the safety of her grandmother's home in Ohio. She finds a ride on the message board when she connects with Josh, who is also headed for Ohio. He picks her up at 9 p.m. and they begin their journey Charlie realizes that Josh may not be the person he purports to be. This is a night filled with numerous twists and turns, which include Charlie's fugue states into movie scenarios. ( )

I am very surprised with Survive the Night by Riley Sager. I love the use of film noir movies to advance the story. Lucky for me that I have seen all the movies mentioned, but the main movie, “Shadow of a Doubt”, remains a thriller where the killer just his reward. Is that a foreshadow of what will happen in this story? The story unfolds into scenes with each character explaining the scene. Each scene brings tension, but I had already decided on the serial killer, but not his reason for killing. Riley Sager ‘s plummets into Charlie’s narcotic behavior as she blames herself for her roommate’s death. As Charlie rides toward Ohio or her death, the reader grasps and fears for the worst outcome. Thankfully, only so many hours in the night before Charlie will face her demons. A fast-reading book full of twists and turns. ( )

Riley Sager has created the perfect creepy scenario in Survive the Night. It's an homage to the movies-- in particular Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt (one of my favorites). A campus in fear of a serial killer, an incredibly risky mode of transportation, and a young woman who dons a red coat and begins a journey to her grandmother's house by getting in a car with someone who may be the Big Bad Wolf. When I put those last three things together, I have to admit that I smiled, and... in case you're wondering about campus ride boards, they did exist. That's how I got from Provo, Utah to Phoenix, Arizona (and back) one spring.

Charlie Jordan is a very unreliable narrator. She's been raised by her grandmother after the death of her parents in a car accident. She's overcome with grief over the murder of her best friend. She's on medication. When she becomes anxious, she starts playing what she calls "movies in her head," so dear reader, you're not always going to know if what she says is happening is really happening at all. One good thing about Survive the Night is that Charlie does come to a better awareness of herself throughout her experience. The question is, is she going to survive long enough to make use of her newfound knowledge?

I have a feeling that most of you are going to love this book. I know I almost did. But in the end, it fell a bit flat. Why? Because I started deducing too many of the twists before they happened, and that really takes the sparkle off a book like this. But even though Survive the Night did lose some of its shine for me, I still found a lot to appreciate. It's going to be interesting to see what Sager comes up with next. ( )

When the campus killer's third victim is Charlie's roommate - she's decided she's had enough of college life. She can't finish the week, let alone the semester. Since her parent's untimely death Charlie has refused to drive so she needs to find a ride back home to Ohio. It's 1991 and public transportation leaves a lot to be desired so she decides to rely on the ride share board. Josh Baxter, a slightly older and nice looking guy, offers to drive her home if she splits the gas money. Easy peasy. She tells herself that the second she smells something fishy she'll bail - but he seems like a nice guy. As they begin their evening drive home, Charlie immediately gets suspicious - he's starting to lie about things. Or is he? Charlie has an over active imagination and sometimes the lines between reality and her mind get blurred. Can she trust him or will she even survive the night. Fast paced and suspenseful. Fun, but not even close to Riley Sager's best work. I even guessed one of the twists which was disappointing. ( )
