Devil in Disguise - Kleypas
Audio performance by Rosemary Wells
4 stars

I did enjoy this one. It is placed as the 7th book in her Ravenel series which is accurate for the timeframe, the later part of the 19th century. However, there are almost no Ravenels actually appearing in the story. The romantic protagonists are actually the grown children from the earlier Wallflower series. I thought the tie-ins to the previous books were very well done. It was fun to see the continuing lives of these likable characters.

The plot was predictable using several tried and true romance tropes. ( instant sexual attraction, temporary amnesia, the illegitimate lost heir) Somehow Kleypas manages to keep the story fresh. The widowed Merritt Sterling (nee Westcliff) has flouted convention since her husband’s death. She personally runs his shipping company. When there are multiple problems with a recent shipment of whisky, it is her job to appease the distiller, Keir MacRae. He’s a Scot. He’s gorgeous. He bears a very, very close resemblance to a character from a previous book. Someone is trying to kill him.

There are several dire situations requiring rescue and recovery. But, it’s not the damsel that’s in distress. It’s the charming, blue-eyed Scotsman who is under threat. There was enough amusing banter to prevent me from picking at the unrealistic aspects of the plot. Such as, the sexual prowess of a man with a knife wound and a couple of broken ribs..

It could be argued that Keir MacRae embodies too many ethnic stereotypes. I choose to be amused rather than offended. Having a number of Scottish golfers among my ancestors, I loved Keir’s first impression of Merritt’s mother, Lillian.

“She’s a charming woman …. Although, she swears like a Scottish golfer”

“ Oh,dear. Are Scottish golfers really so profane?”

“Aye, the worst language you’ll ever hear is from a Scot in a sand bunker.”

An unmitigated pleasure. So many appearances from others in the Ravenels and Wallflowers series', and Merritt and Keir were delightful and smart and strong and capable and they respected one another. There were no silly complications for the sake of drama, and no problems that could have been cleared up by basic communication. I was charmed start to finish by the story and all the characters. A great vacation read! I have started and restarted my "serious book" and I think I am going to make vacation 100% brainless pleasure reading. That is not to say that this is a brainless book. Lisa Kleypas is a talented writer and her books are well researched and beautiful. The brainlessness is me -- Kleypas gives me a story to sink into, it takes very little from the reader, and sometimes that is exactly what I want. ( )

It was nice catching up with Sebastian, Evie, Phoebe, Dr. Gibson and Ethan Ransom. Have to say Merritt and Keir are not favorite characters. The two very strong-willed people are totally mismatched.

After coming to London to sell his whiskey, Keir is attacked in the street and left for dead but manages to get to Merritt’s home where she nurses him back to health. He returns to the warehouse where his whiskey is stored and it blows up forcing him to jump out a 3rd floor window and Merritt nurses him back to health. Another attempt on his life before the HEA. I had such a good time with this book! I have been a huge fan of Lisa Kleypas’s writing for a very long time. I haven’t read everything that she has written but I have liked all of her books that I have read so far. This book is the seventh book in the Ravenels series but it can easily be read as a stand-alone. I was drawn into this story early on and I found it hard to put it down until I had reached the final page. This really was a fantastic book!

Merritt is a widow running her late husband’s shipping company when she meets Keir. Keir is in the process of moving whiskey from Scotland when things go horribly wrong. These two are drawn to each other from the start but Keir doesn’t think that he would be good for her, especially after he realizes someone is trying to kill him. Merritt would have none of it and their bond only grows stronger as they spend more time with each other. I loved the chemistry between this pair and thought they really were perfect for each other.

This book was pretty exciting. I was thrilled to see so many familiar characters play important roles in this story, especially key characters from The Wallflowers series. You don’t have to be familiar with that series to enjoy this book but Sebastian, Evie, Marcus, and Lillian all make an appearance in this book. I really liked that there were some pretty big issues in the book that Keir and Merritt had to deal with together and I thought that the way that they handled everything made their relationship stronger.

I would highly recommend this book to others. I think that this was a very well-written historical romance filled with memorable characters. I will definitely be reading more of Lisa Kleypas’s work in the future.

I received a digital review copy of this book from Avon Books via NetGalley. ( )

I received an ARC of this book to read through Edelweiss+. All opinions are my own.
Devil in Disguise is the seventh book in Lisa Kleypas’s The Ravenels series. You don’t need to have read all of the other books in the series to enjoy this one. In fact, I would suggest reading the Wallflowers series first instead. Lady Merritt Sterling ( daughter of Marcus, Lord Westcliffe and Daisy Bowman) as grown accustomed to widowhood, she runs her late husbands shipping company, and is content with her life. All of that changes when Scottish distiller Keir Macrea bursts into her life, soaking wet and furious. The instant attractions she feels for him knocks her off balance because she is a planner, one who makes lists and considers every option before taking action, but if there is one thing losing her husband has taught her is that if you have a chance for happiness you should grab it. Keir Macrae came to London to sell the whiskey produced by his distillery and the trip seems to be one disaster after another, from customs problems, to warehousing, his powerful attraction to a woman who would never fit into his life and now it appears someone is trying to kill him. When Keir is badly injured in a fire and explosion at her warehouse, Merritt’s Uncle Sebastian, Duke of Kingstons proves to be a surprising ally in protecting Keir from futher harm. I enjoyed this book immensley and highly reccomend it. Steam Level: Medium.
