Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend (utgåvan 2015)

Scaredy Squirrel is a squirrel who is afraid of a lot of things, even making friends. He is very careful on how he plans to make a new friend. He meets a friend who he thinks is dangerous but ends up being one of the best friends he has ever met. I liked how he eventually overcame his fears. This read capture children's interest and give them ways to get the confidence to take risks. ( )

This is a darling book that adults also find humorous. The pictures are cute and detailed. I would use this in the classroom to discuss how to make friends, making judgments about people, and that a friend can be found in the most unlikely places. ( )

I really liked this story and and think its a great book for elementary school children of all ages. The boxes have simple sentences such as “He whistles.” and “He knits” with pictures in each box that show the squirrel doing these activities. This is good for younger readers because they get a visual representation to better understand the meaning of each word. However, the theme of this story is perfect for both younger and older elementary readers. The main idea of this book is that people should not have a formula for choosing a friend and should not try and act differently to find friends. Friends can be anyone who makes you happy and will accept you the way you are. With all of the bullying and judgement based on physical appearance in schools, it is important for students to reconsider these standards, which is exactly what this book strives to do. The character is relatable because every child knows the feeling of wanting to make new friends and wanting to make a good first impression. The book also teaches children to be careful around strangers while also sending the message that you should never be judgmental about someone you do not know, because they could end up being very friendly. This is shown when Scaredy Squirrel realizes that the intimidating dog does not want to bite him, but just wants to make a new friend. The illustrations in this book are vibrant and colorful, which is a fantastic addition to a clever and funny story. This is a fun book about friendship that I would encourage any elementary school teacher to read with their students. ( )

This book is fantasy because it talks about how a squirrel is trying to find the perfect friend by creating a perfect plan. Scaredy squirrel does everything he can to go out and find this friend. Eventually, the friend he meets is a dog. I could use this book when talking about animals in class. I could also use this to talk about how even though a dog and squirrel are very different they can still be friends just like how even if you're different from someone else its okay to be their friend. I would say the media of this book is mixed media, ink, and colored pencil or crayon. ( )
