The latest in the Psy-Changeling books actually has very little of the Changelings in it. The main focus is on two Psy, one from the Mercant family and a CEO previously never mentioned. The PsyNet is still collapsing but when Canto Mercant thinks he may have found a way to strengthen the Anchors Psy that keep the net from collapsing. There is the usual awakening of emotions in the Psy main characters since Silence has broken and the two of them discover that they have a shared past. As usual the Architect is trying to bring down the net in order to build a powerbase for themselves to rule over all three races. The book is everything a reader has come to expect from the author and I enjoyed it. This may not be the best place to start the series but as usual there is enough background information given during the book that the reader will not be lost.

Nun geht die Gestaltwandlerserie schon in den zwanzigsten Band und immer noch kann sie mich fesseln. Ich liebe es, wie die Geschichte immer weitergeht, man nicht nur in jedem Buch altbekannte Charaktere trifft, während man mal völlig neue, oder aber bekannte Figuren als Protagonisten sieht, sondern gleichzeitig tatsächlich auch im Geschehen immer weiter und tiefer in diese Welt vorrückt. Ich kann nur jedem empfehlen hier wirklich bei Band 1 anzufangen um alles zu verstehen, denn auch wenn es immer neue Protagonisten sind, so ist die Geschichte mittlerweile so vielschichtig und es ist schon so unendlich viel passiert, dass die Wissenslücken einfach viel zu groß wären um erst hier einzusteigen. Dieses Universum ist groß und es gibt so viel Wissen und Hintergrund.

Die Stunde der Wächter hebt die Probleme der Medialen auf eine neue Ebene und macht gleichzeitig total Sinn. Noch dazu ist es nicht nur wieder spannend und natürlich Gefühlvoll - es bringt auch noch ein Stück mehr Vielfalt in diese Reihe. So trifft man nicht nur erneut meine heimlichen Favoriten seit den Bären - die Nebencharaktere Pavel und Arwen, die ein eigenes Buch sehr verdient hätten - sondern auch auf einen Protagonisten im Rollstuhl - mein persönliches Highlight in diesem Buch! Es ist einfach toll, vor allem weil es nicht einfach nur eine Nebenrolle ist und dazu auch noch für die Welt sehr passend (und gut) umgesetzt ist. Außerdem liebe ich es schon allein deshalb, weil ich mich irgendwo auch gesehen fühle und es einfach ein tolles Gefühl ist, dass auch ein Rollstuhl einer Protagonistenrolle eben nicht im Weg steht. Echt toll! Ich bin in dieser Welt eh schon so tief verankert, dass es eigentlich auch schon real sein könnte, das macht es dann noch realer.

Aber auch an anderer Stelle kommt mit einem weiteren Charakter nun mehr Diversität ins Spiel. Als Nebencharakter zwar, aber absolut selbstverständlich. Man merkt einfach, wie sich die Serie auch durch äußere Einflüsse entwickelt und das eben auch Themen angesprochen werden, die mittlerweile endlich mehr gesehen werden. Einseitig war diese Reihe in Bezug auf Herkunft und Hautfarbe zwar noch nie, und auch andere Themen, wie Mentale Gesundheit und auch die ein oder andere Behinderung waren schon vorhanden - aber gerade was Identität und Sexualität angeht war es sonst sehr einseitig. Was ja im 16. Band zumindest durch die kleine Nebenrolle von Pavel und Arwen mehr Abwechslung bekam.

Dieser Band hat mir wieder viel besser gefallen als der letzte, auch wenn ich bisher noch jedes der zwanzig Bücher mochte. Klar, es hat natürlich auch wieder den gleichen Aufbau wie sie alle, es beinhaltet den Schuss Drama und den Kitsch, den man eben kennt. Aber das ist einfach Teil dieser Welt und irgendwie ist es doch auch schön - selbst wenn ich manchmal durchaus auch die Augen verdrehen mag. Ich mag diese Reihe wie am ersten Tag und bin jetzt schon gespannt auf das nächste Buch. ( )

This was such a fascinating installation for the series. I really liked all we learned about this world. As for the romance, it gave me big Aden/ Zaira vibes (which I have no problems with). I liked Payal and Canto and their relationship dynamic. My only difficulty was that the life threatening situations were a bit too much (one situation because it has been overused in the Trinity series and the other situation because there was enough conflict going on that it felt unnecessary). Plot:
As part of the Mercant family, Canto is well-connected and has always been protected by them – meaning that despite the fact that he doesn’t conform to Psy ideas of perfection as he’s a wheelchair user, he could still rise in the family ranks and is now in the unique positions to bring together a Psy designation that has been mostly forgotten: the anchors like him. One of those anchors is Payal Rao, tough CEO of the Rao family conglomerate and Canto know that he needs her cooperation to make his plan of an anchor union work. What he didn’t expect when they finally meet in person, was that he actually knows Payal from when they were children – and their old connection immediately comes back to life again.

Last Guard gives us quite a few new perspectives in a world that has been firmly established – not an easy thing to pull off without feeling shoehorned in, but Singh manages it. And I liked Payal and Canto, making the book a full success for me.
