A clown escapes from Circus Town - Will McIntosh
Title says it all really. The said clown meets a Green Arrow superhero, some Knights and a Prostitute from other themed 'Towns'. Events escalate into a rebellion which reveals the true nature of the bizarre world these characters inhabit. While the resolution is perhaps unoriginal the tale itself never lets up.
Fishermen - Al Robertson
In ancient times a Christian painter is captured in the Med by pirates. However the 'pirates' turn out to be peaceful and Christians themselves and offer him his freedom if he will paint them and their Church. The writing captures the subtlety of the painter's art well but the story 'message' about oppression is a little blunt. References to 'English mercenaries', 'Fenicians' etc and the gospel of Thomas seem to signal alternate history.
Saving Diego - Matthew Kressel
Diego is an addict hooked on a drug called jisthmus on the remote planet Gilder Nefan. His former partner in drug dealing crime, Mikal, makes the long journey to help Diego kick his habit, in order to assuage his guilt over leaving his friend in the lurch during a police raid years before. Diego has a mysterious minder called Saa and local mythology connect the Numens, a godlike race. to jisthmus. The story moves to a (somewhat predictable) neat conclusion.
Far & deep - Alaya Dawn Johnson
On what appears to be a verdant alien planet, Leilani's carefree, rebellious, mother Pineki is found murdered on the beach. A legendary diver and ex-member of the council of elders, drummed out for breaking the chastity vow, it appears that the murderer is an ex-lover her mother cursed. Her daughter's search for the truth sparks her own rebellion.
Home again - Paul M. Berger
A very short story in which a returning spacefarer uses his memory of home to get him home. But how reliable is it...
Black swan - Bruce Sterling
A black swan is a unique event which triggers a certain future. An IT journo meets a hacker contact in a cafe in Turin. The technology developments he hears about get more and more unbelievable until the hacker takes him outside the cafe, and uses his laptop to take them to the same cafe, but in another reality. Then things really start to get weird (e.g. the Sarkozies get an unflattering walk on part). A superb meditation on the multiverse well spiced with mordant observations on
contemporary life. ( )
