En ung mand, Andreas, er på vej med et troppetog til fronten. Han har en konstant forudanelse om snarlig død. Men han ved ikke om det er nu eller om et år? Han spiller kort med et par andre i toget og ser hvordan alle omkring ham har indrettet sig efter krigen og dens vilkår.
Toget er selvfølgelig et billede på hele krigsmaskinen, der kværner unge mennesker til blodig grød.
