Entertaining and I liked that it doesn’t shy away from killing off characters even if sometimes that’s a dagger to the reader’s heart, if everyone survives the situation just wouldn’t feel as dangerous as horror should feel.

It did take a minute for me to get a handle on the main character names since there are six and sometimes they’re referred to by their surname or by horror movie archetypes but it helped that all six personalities were pretty well defined. Considering how much action is going on, the author managed to squeeze in enough personal details for each of them so that you understand who they are beyond those aforementioned horror archetypes and what they’re dealing with in their home lives. While Allie and Rachel were my favorites by the end you really do care about everyone’s survivial.

The one romance here understandably didn’t really have enough time to develop though I did like their chemistry.

I enjoyed the bonds everyone in the group gradually formed and one friendship in particular provided the most emotional moment of the story, a level of emotion I hadn’t necessarily expected going into something described as satire and horror. ( )

teen fiction (fat camp kids overcome zombie apocalypse)

well, they aren't exactly zombies, but yeah this was a fun one. Lots of humor and action. ( )

Take a mixing bowl, add two teens who used to be best friends, stir in misunderstanding and a dash of resentment, then drop in more characters, a farm boy hoping to earn tuition money, a teen who feels like it's impossible to meet his father's expectations, then add another with great computer skills whose own dad thinks he's a waste of space. Send them to a new sketchy weight loss camp in a remote area outside Flagstaff, AZ and have it snow like crazy while the power cuts out...And there's no cell phone service. Sprinkle with zombies and let simmer. This is what you get when you open this book. It's a mix of black humor, nail-screeching survival and a couple conspiracies. Lots of action and an ending that is sorta "It sucked, we're still alive." I've been stranded in a snowstorm in a remote spot outside Flagstaff back in the 1960s, an experience which made this story a bit more close to home. It's a great read for teens and adults who like their comedy dark and bloody with a side of 'how did we dodge so many bullets?' ( )

Oh my gosh - Kelly deVos's new YA novel, Eat Your Heart Out, was so much fun to read!!

I think this description from Razorbill is perfect - and it's what had me so eager to pick up Eat Your Heart Out... "Shaun of the Dead meets Dumplin' in this bitingly funny YA thriller about a kickass group of teens battling a ravenous group of zombies."

There are six teens and and a leader in Vee's pod at Camp Featherlite for Overweight Teens. One of the other members is a aspiring film maker and she mentally slots everyone into a role - you know, The Outcast, The Jerk, The Nerd and more. This cemented the feeling of being immersed in a teen horror flick. Which I have to say, has been a long time guilty pleasure of mine.

deVos gives each of the characters a voice with their own chapters. They're all wonderfully drawn with strengths and weaknesses. But as a group, they're pretty formidable. The reader is privy to the overall picture - their secrets and the danger stalking them. And there are plenty of chances in Eat Your Heart Out, to pick up a pillow and yell, "Don't go outside - there are zombies!"

Lots of action kept me rapidly turning pages. Eat Your Heart Out did read like a movie!

And that cover? Fantastic! Eat Your Heart Out was great escapist reading. But along with being a fun page turner, deVos has woven in a needed message as well. "...Because when you create a culture when people can be dehumanized for trivial reasons like body size, everyone's human dignity is in jeopardy. I intend for this read to be inclusive and affirming, and hope you read with care if these topics are ones close to your heart." This was a first read of deVos for me - and it most definitely won't be the last.

(And I leave you with this warning - be careful with your hazelnut coffee whitener...) ( )
